Richard, Keith

I too think of Bill pretty well every day, and miss his companionship, honour and integrity.
He was a good, decent man.

Thank you for sharing these photos of Mr. Turner.  I note with interest and appreciation that he was awarded the Bronze Star.  The Bronze Star is is an individual military award of the United States Armed Forces. It may be awarded for acts of heroism, acts of merit, or meritorious service in a combat zone.  That alone is reason enough to honor this man I never knew.  Thank you Sir for your service to this nation.  It is service such as this that allows each of us, wherever we may be, to live our lives, enjoy this rewarding hobby or profession of photography, and even comment on a voting system we may or may not care for.

I never had the privilege to know Mr. Turner nor gain from his experiences (though a search of the forum history may certainly allow for that), but it is clear from the notations on his grave marker and the comments shared by others here that he was the finest example of a man.  What more can be said than thank you, and to honor his service and his example.  May our heavenly father have welcomed you into his presence forever.  Be sure and capture some spectacular photos.

I wonder if Bill ever discussed the significance of his nick-name, Bootstrap.

Anyone recall?

Never had the pleasure of knowing Bill but appreciate the contribution he made to both here and OTF over the years.  Live long and prosper in our memories.

Fond memories of Bill
3

I liked him when he was optimistic.

I like him when he was grumpy.  Yes, he could be grumpy. We all know that.

A master of saying a lot in a few words.

But an even greater master of saying a lot with a single image.

His landscapes have convinced me to get a Zd8mmFE lens.

His late selfportraits will never be forgotten: they are some of his best and most courageous work.

Gidday Roel

On the various occasions on which I spoke to Bill on the phone, he was unfailingly not grumpy. Quite the contrary. And that was right up to within a couple of weeks of his death.

He faced that with fortitude and acceptance. What more can one say?

Dammit, Bill. I go away for 5 minutes (OK, 2 years!), and you DIE on me?

I'm not sure what I can say, apart from THANK YOU, to a still, small, voice of calm in the dpreview mob. Always something interesting to say. Always pretty damn right, too.

I'm off to be upset, for a while.

RIP Bill.

Re: remembering "Bootstrap" Bill Turner.......

Not sure if there is any correlation or story in this, but just finished watching The Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End and Orlando Blooms character is William Turner and his father in this movie is "Bootstrap" William Turner.  Coincidence or strange??

Yes, I did a search on that movie. That is interesting.
