Can you use DX lenses in FX mode, not DX mode, on the d600? If so,what would the 16-85mm be on the D600. That is, would the focal length remain at 16mm if it could take a picture in full frame mode? Thanks

Thanks Guidenet, Could I possiblly zoom the 16-85mm up to say 18 or 19mm and not get the vignetting with the full frame , or am I stuck. In other words,I wonder how wide can one go with a DX lens before the vignetting starts to show up? Thanks
Testing is the easiest answer. I've read reports of folks using the 12-24 between 18 and 24 with minimal vignetting and I've also read that the 35 1.8 dx wide open is pretty usable wide open. But I agree with Craig above. Use lenses for what they were designed for - it will just make your life simpler.
The tokina 12-24 does a pretty good job from 19-24 on my D800...but it's mostly a stop-gap until I can move up for something different. I'm sure if you had something similar it'd perform the same on the D600

As our friends have answered, some wide angle lenses allow some FX use, mostly at wide apertures and their longer settings. As was said, you should try and see. I've found it to be very unrewarding.
If you're considering a full frame camera, really you need to buy a full frame lens for it. Why not start with the excellent Nikon 50 f/1.8G at $219 USD and use that until you can save up. You might find that it will help you attain a higher level of insight into your compositions. Nikon's new 24-85 VR is also turning out to be an excellent lens at $599 USD or less in a bundle.
I still use the excellent 35-70 f/2.8 AFD which I find to be superb even on the D800. They sell used for around $400 in excellent condition or less in average condition. Be aware of fungus and haze on really old models.

Yes, you can use any DX lens in FX mode, but as mentioned in earlier posts, you will see an ugly circle around the picture. It's not even vignetting, since you can't remove it in post-processing. It's just that the diameter of the lens is too small for the sensor; therefore the sides show a black circle.
BTW you can assign the Fn button to shift between DX and FX, pretty neat.
If you want to have the same field of view (=see the same amount on the picture) as your 16-85 on FX you have to go for a 24-120 lens. Nikon has one (24-120 f4 VR).
The 16-85mm will remain a DX lens on FX whereas the 12-24mm Dx acts like a FX lens from 16.5mm to 24mm. On D600 the DX image is approximately 10.6 mp which is still a reasonable size compared to a D300 image
