Filters on the SX40 HS?

I've noticed that the diameter of the lens is 52 mm. Why can't I use a 52 mm filter and screw it in? Would this harm the lens in any way? What are my alternatives? Thanks, James

Re: Filters on the SX40 HS?

There are a couple of recent threads about filters for the SX40.
Canon recommends that you use 67mm filters (my preference), although 58mm filters will also work albeit with possible vignetting (i.e., dark corners in photo at the widest angles). Either size requires a filter adapter. The filter screws into the adapter, which attaches to the lens with a bayonet mount.
A 52mm filter cannot be used with the SX40. Even if you managed to attach it to the lens somehow, I believe the metal/plastic rim of the filter would be visible in most shots.

Those are not screw threads on the lens barrel, they are baffle rings.  You cannot screw a filter onto them.
