New member here (and some questions)

Hi,

I've lurking in the forums for quite some time and I decided that I should finally register :).

I though I could introduce myself but I think that I'll introduce my gear and intresses in photography instead. Here is what I already have:
-NX100
-NX11
-20mm
-30mm
-20-50
-18-55
-50-200
-sef15a

Everything I've bought had some kind of discount on them. I'd be happy to buy some higher end lenses if I could afford them :). I actually also had Olympus Pen with just one pancake but I got NX11 and 18-55 for 250 euros so just had to change ^^. Have to say that I have been quite happy with the system even with its few shortcomings.

The 30mm is absolutely my favorite. I like the focal length and the size. The sharpness is nice too.

NX100 I just had to buy because I got the body, 20mm, 20-50mm, bag and sef15a for 400 euros. I haven't used 20 mm much as I find that the 20-50 isn't that much bigger and is close enough in iq. I also find 20-50 better than 18-55 mainly because of the smaller size.

50-200 is the newest addition that arrived today. I tried it but it was too dark and foggy to actually test it properly. And as it was dark enough to get some interesting photos I started getting too cold...

I did some testing indoors and it seems very sharp. I found that the OIS at least works quite well. I also noticed that as it was said in some reviews the AF has problems if it is a little dark.

Photography is quite new hobby to me. I've just started it during this year after adventures in the point and shoot land. I've noticed that I like a lot of things and want to try everything except controlled studio shooting :D. Or maybe I would like to but it seems like too much of a hassle for me. I also like HDR shooting and NX-series seems to fit that well. I like doing both realistic and not so realistic pics. Depends on my mood and the subject actually.

As this is a photography forum I guess I have to post one of my shots aswell :D. It might not be the best of the bunch but I hope you find it interesting.

And from those who didn't get bored enough already I would like to ask few questions. I tried to find answers but unfortunately I couldn't:

1) I was thinking of getting nx200 later on as it is quite a bit cheaper than the newer models. Is the AF speed much better than with nx100/11? Do the newer ones have even better AF? The main reason for upgrading would be the better high ISO performance

2) Is the 18-55 in nx200 bundle the newer one with a metal mount? I might want to change to that one as it seems more durable.

3) I've used picasa and gimp so far but they seem cumbersome. Picasa is nice for keeping pics in order but lacks decent PP. Gimp on the other hand seems quite hard for more than one pic. As I shoot both raw and ooc jpgs do you have any recommended programs that I should use? I am still student so I should get some nice discounts. I was pondering between different adobe products but wasn't sure on what to pick.

No, I think AF speed is about the same. High ISO will be better if you shoot RAW.

No, that comes with the NX20 or newer. Maybe find a used one on ebay if you have trouble with yours or something.

I think Lightroom is the best balance between post processing, organization, and everything. Download a trial from adobe and see if you like it.

Thanks for the answers.

I guess I'll try the lightroom then.

So the nx200 has no real AF speed advantage compared to nx100/11? I thought that is quite interesting. Although the improved high ISO performance should suit me very well.

Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty sure that there are very recent forum posts commenting on a new NX200 firmware upgrade that significantly increases shooting speed, although that won't necessarily increase AF speed. I've found that the NX200 focuses quicker and more reliably in low light than the NX100, and for manual focusing with NX or non-Samsung lenses, the NX200's 5x and 8x magnification works incredibly well, far better than the NX100's 2x magnification. If you like what you get from the 30mm pancake on the NX100, you'll love what it produces with the NX200. The NX200 is smaller and better built than the NX100 but there are a couple of drawbacks. It doesn't use the same battery, and it doesn't support the external EVF that can be purchased for the NX100.
