A simple poll......24MP or 36MP...

Just out of curiosity I'd like to know who would have preferred that Nikon had made it's new flagship cameras(D800/D800E) 24MP rather than 36MP.
for so long they(Nikon) told us they though twelve MP was more than enough.

There are obviously good arguments for both alternatives but I think it would be very interesting to hear what the photographers who use these cameras would prefer.

If you could please just answer 24 or 36, it would be much appreciated and it could be quite informative.

kind regards

tony

Wrong 'flagship'

How many MP is the D4? There's your answer. Give me a D600 or D800 body with one of those D4 sensors, and now we're talking.

Nikon did well

D800 is a real flagship in terms of resolution, and works as well at hoigh ISo once you print at same sizes. So best of both worlds.

I can crop down to 24MP on my D800 if I want to. 36MP is great to have.

24MP - no real need for more and the additional space / computer processing power required is a waste (even 24MP is more than really needed)

Both

They should have had different resolutions for the E and Non E versions.

24mp D800 with higher frame rate (8fps FX) as their main semi-pro body

36mp D800E as a specialist studio and landcape option.

16mp D4 as the speed machine sports model

Even better, D4 sensor for the plain D800... the rest of the line as is.

I could use more than 36 MP.

The D800E only produces a 20x30" print at 240 ppi. I could use a 360 ppi 24x36" image. At 360 ppi (optimum for Epson printers) the D800E image is only 20.4x13.6"

IMO I think Nikon should have used the 24MP sensor in the D800 and used the 36MP in the D4. The D800 is not for everyone as stated by Thom Hogan. Three friends of mine (one a pro) observed two things - 1.) It's a tripod camera and 2.) you better have good glass. It's very unforgiving when it comes to using "cheaper" lenses .....you are almost forced to use "Pro glass. For myself, I just bought a new (actually a Nikon refurb) D700 mainly because I have no need for a 36MP camera and I have some "pro" glass!

Now if the D800 was 24MP camera that would have been a winner at least for me and I'm sure a lot of other people.

Any 72dpi multiple is optimum for Epson or any plotter, above 288 dpi there is no way anybody can say the difference, ...even 144dpi will print great. 216dpi will give a superb print that would approach 24x36.
