Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

I don't know if this a joke... Why i can't disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb Mode? This is a great and stupid software limitation... Is the same on other NX cameras or only in the NX200? In this way i can't produce star trail images... I'm thinking on sell all my NX stuff. I'm sorry to say these cameras are not for serious photographers.

Hi,

at least i can disable it in my NX10 (I just tested it). BTW, it is not very pleasant to rad your posts, I understand that you might be frustrated, and I understand that your NX200 has several shortcomings, but we are not the Samsung customer service, so please try to be nicer if you want to have helpful answers.

Cheers,

Jose

I'm sorry, but i just upgrade from NX100 and i i'm a bit disappointing in some points... Maybe i have to go back (NX11?) so i can use a remote trigger and bulb mode without long time noise reduction...

can you explain why can't you disable it? did you turn off the NR in the menu settings?

ok, I think I figured out what you mean. what ISO are you shooting btw? and have you tried shooting or checking the images if you have a problem with them with NR during bulb mode?

thanks. do you shoot RAW btw? the NR usually kicks in above ISO 3200. so even at 3200, you should be alright.

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

Is the same in any ISO value. I tried with different values, ISO 100, ISO 200, etc...

The problem is when I have to take multiples long exposure shots consecutively. After finish the first shot the camera stops while is "processing" the image with NR.

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

Now I don't have NX10/11 or NX200, but at NX20 at bulb mode it is impossible to turn of long term NR, so it must be like this in all NX cameras.

the processing time has nothing to do with NR. but is indeed a problem if you shoot multiple shots. the only thing I can advise you is to use a faster card. depending on how long you expose the image, it would still take some processing time, although it would shorten it to what you probably experience with the card that you are using.

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

Long Time NR applies dark frame subtraction for reduce noise. If my exposure is 10 minutes, the Long Time NR takes 10 minutes more, and is in this point when cameras is processing. Then, camera make subtraction and save the image to the memory card. In resume, take on picture in this way, takes double time.

Thanks for the information Daniel!

For night shot i will use better my Mark II, there's no problem for deactivate NR at long exposure ;-).

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

another user thanks for the answers and replies too. I remember asking this question a while back and was led to believe that one could turn off long term NR shooting raw in bulb mode. Exactly as the op has tried, I too wish to do night trail shots. The maximum the shutter can be kept open seems to be 240sec (4min in bulb mode) and I was curious why the camera took pretty much the same time to process the image. Unfortunately, it seems at least on my nx200 long term NR cannot be switched off (in this mode) as it is greyed out.

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

a workaround might be to shoot shorter exposures and merge them using s/w ( http://www.startrails.de/html/software.html ).

Re: Unable to disable Long Term Noise Reduction in Bulb mode?

holly-cow! Thats a great link frank-in-toronto. The author developed the application themselves in C. Definitely going to give that a try.
Thanks.

also, while we are on the subject, does anyone know of a dummy battery than can fit the nx200 with the power cable hanging out to plug into a larger power source for such an activity? I know the nx200 is designed for it, cos the battery lid has a very small flap that is removed to accommodate the external power cable once the battery lid is closed.

There is a Mac version called StarStax as well.  Very similar, if star trails doesn't have a mac version yet (it didn't before).

I have this problem with bulb mode on the NX20 where on long exposures, like say 4 or 5 minutes, the dark frame subtraction removes the entire image, there is nothing left but black.  So confused, anyone else use bulb mode?  PS you can't turn off DFS in bulb mode.

For now I can stack 30 second exposures in continuous, but it takes so many shots to get a reasonable length of time.

when I was checking out that photo stacking/joining software, and searching on the web for similar software, I noticed there was always several hundred photo's involved

Very true, but if I could do say 2 or 3 minute shots it would reduce the number of shots by 4x or 6x
