Need help to adjust picture

Hi

The wife and I wanted to get a larger print of one of the photos from this summer. One thing I'm struggling with is that the face is pretty dark and I can't seem to figure out how to get it much better.

I have attached the original (well the original is in RAW but 22mb so it's the 100% quality jpg)

The original:

This is my attempt:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thought darkening the water would help. Also a combination of selective contrast mask and PwL blends for the result.

Here's my attempt . . . .

Since layers, alpha channels, and masks confound me, I used simpler tools - colour select, invert selection, brightness/contrast adjustment (much improved in CS-5), and my favorite, the history brush to restore here and there. I also lightened the eyes, and added a lot of red to the face - selecting the blue cast from the water and warming it up. Hope you like it. Very cute baby - nearly as cute as my granddaughters

Yes very good result Steve. I tried your approach. It's very effective. Here is my attempt. I didn't put red on the skin. Just removed the bluish reflection off the baby's face and reduced some from the hand under water. I guess I put too much feather on my selection. The halo is noticeable.
