Re: Wireless shutter remote for OMD-EM5?

Just bought a set of Cactus V5 remotes to use with my E-M5 and FL50R. Used them a couple of times and they work perfectly, no matter where you set the camera and flash. If they are anywhere within 100 meters of one another, the flash fires every time flawlessly.

The one I use is supposed to be compatible with the EM-5. It's a little pricey, but is so much more than a remote.

The way I have used it, I am manually tripping the shutter. There supposedly is a way to set the Cactus V5 system up in a remote release fashion but I have not yet done so.

This is also a non-TTL system. I either have to do all manual flash or, I could set the flash unit up with the sensor pointing at the subject and use non-TTL auto.

Cactus works fine for shutter release

You just need to get the correct cable to connect one of the transceivers into the EM5's usb port ....

Yes, I understand it works fine with remote flash but I want a remote shutter release.  Will it function as that as well and do I need two units ?

Thanks,

R

My Pixel RW-221 works fine and I have used it quite a bit for about a year.

I wish they had kept the RM-1 functionality.  I used it all the time when using a tripod.  Now I'm limited to a cable release.  The phone based Wi-Fi remote is a PITA.  The phone has to be turned of then the app selected.  Then one risks the phone powering down at the crucial moment while calls and reminders keep coming in.  All I want is to trigger the shutter as simply as possible.  I have no desire to complicate things by attempting to  change camera settings remotely.

Re: Wireless shutter remote for OMD-EM5?

Hey,

I have an EM5 too and I'm looking for a remote shutter release.  I actually already bought the Pixel RW-221, but one feature I really want is to be able to use the remote to set the camera to take photos every x (1, 5, 10, etc) seconds.  So then I tried the Pixel TW-283 and buying the cable that would work with the EM5.  That seemed like it would work, but it turned out that the cable and port on the TW-283 ARENT the same size (one was 2.5mm and the other 3.5mm).  After arguing with the company they told me they dont even make a cord that would fit the EM5 and the TW-283. I ended up returning that too since they werent compatable.

Anyone have a remote shutter release that would work? Or would it work if I did go with the TW-283 and cable, then buy a random plug size converter from another place (sorry for my technical jargen)?

Thanks!

The 2.5mm interface is very simple. Short the middle ring to the outer ring for autofocus (half-press). Short the tip to the outer ring for shutter. Canon wired remotes should work.

I cut the cable on my old RM-CB1 wired remote for E-System cameras, and put a 2.5mm stereo plug on it. Works perfectly!

This means that, if you can solder, you could very simply cobble up your own wireless remote, using stuff like remote car lock parts. There are even smaller ones intended for Arduino use.

I realize this may be intimidating to someone with no electronics background. And it would be nice if Olympus could give us a simple WiFi trigger that doesn't require a smart phone.

Re: Wireless shutter remote for OMD-EM5?

I have no experience with that...it does seem very daunting.  Would I just be able to get a 3.5mm - 2.5mm plug converter and then use the TW-283 and cable for EM5 from Pixel?

Thanks!

Probably. Just make sure it is a STEREO 2.5mm adapter.
