Filter adapter for p510

Hi,I'm in the UK and recently recieved an adaptor from Hongkong via eBay,it's a step up ring from 51mm to 58mm. I brought some 58mm filters and these can be left on ,even after shutdown, however the Nikon lens protector obviously will not fit. It's a metal ring, and I've used it with effect with polarizing filter. It seems to screw tight but it came off once as I turned the camera off?, but its a worthwhile investment as there's no alternative!

Personally I found just one seller based in Hong Kong, selling the item via Ebay (under two names) and via Amazon.co.uk (under the third name). The adapter that you have is like mine, the lenght of the thread that fits the camera is 2mm short, and only a third of a turn is allowed while the camera is off. If one would fully insert the adapter while the camera is on, once switched off it will soon damage the motor/gear. The lenght of the thread should be approx. 4.5mm instead of 2.5mm (that included the gap for the cutting tool of the thread, that leaves just a litle over one turn of thread). I have written to the supplier but received no reply, I hope that Nikon will soon do something about it.

The P510 doesn't have filter threads, just parallel ridges intended only for the lens cap to grip, so there is not much that Nikon can do about it now.

P510 manual, page 7:

"Lens Cap

• Do not attach other than the lens cap to the lens."

Re: Filter adapter for p510

I also bought the adapter from Hong Kong and I am so disappointed in it - it's great in that they've come up with a thread of some kind which screws securely into the striations on the camera lens barrel, but they have failed to allow for the fact that the lens retracts slightly into the camera body, so that the flange fouls the body of the camera and could cause motor damage when turned off. If you don't screw it firmly home, the adapter is so loose when the camera is open, it's virtually useless. As mentioned by another contributor, the thread needs to be longer to allow the filter flange to screw fully home and leave a few thou clearance between the flange and the camera body. If this is problematic because of the screw/striation fit, all that is needed is a short length of plain barrel of the same diameter as the lens mount between the thread and the flange to hold the flange just clear of the camera body when the lens closes. Another solution would be a suitably thick (2mm - 3mm) shim to seat into the lens housing, to let the adapter screw firmly home, but leaving that clearance behind the flange.

It's all so basic and simple - they've done the tricky bit with the screw design. I'm totally frustrated that they can't just do the obvious!
