The successor of SX40 HS announced next week or 14 days :)

I am waiting for the SX50 HS since long time.

I tried the SX40 HS but the LCD screen is too little.
The relavilery low light is SO - SO.

And Canon Rumors annoucend in the end of summer (next week or in 14 days)
the new SX50 HS. I am very excited.

On a Vietnam site, here some precision about this new Powershot camera:

Digic 5 processor is very good. The same as the G1X that i had too.

I will purchase the SX50 HS for telephoto and macro photography.

So 2 complementarity cameras: the G1X and the SX50.

Interesting info.

Canon playing safe again. Going back to 14.1mp (like the sx30), is that a good idea?
42x zoom will be the same focal length (24-1000mm) as Nikon P510.

Peter,

I just wonder about lens speed. The SX40HS is f/2.7-5.8. That's already pretty slow at the long end, and forces you to use higher ISO to maintain shutter speeds. If they go to 42x, can they maintain lens speed, or will it be even slower? Panasonic has gone the other way with the FZ200 which is "only" 25-600 mm equivalent; but is now a constant f/2.8 across the range. Also, the SX230HS has a 230k dot EVF, and the FZ200 has gone to an amazing 1,313k dots. Much nicer to use. Canon seems to be chasing the competition in a numbers game; while Panasonic is going their own way.

GeralW,

thank you for these informations.

I will go on Panasonic Forum to read some threads about the FZ200.

Now, i have the Canon G1X and the Pana FZ35.

The bridge FZ35 is useful but if the FZ200 is 2.8 all the zoom, i think it is better, no?

I will go make my searches.

Thank you again.

Peter.

My thoughts are, going up on the sensor to 14.1mp and increasing zoom to 42x is going in the wrong direction. We have seen it done before many times to no avail on small sensor cams like these. However Canon brought great hope with the stellar image quality of the SX40/35x super zoom cam. I will give Canon the benefit of the doubt with the SX50 that maybe it will be just as good or better than the SX40?
Time will tell.

On another note as far as I can tell the FZ200's images cannot hold a candle to the SX40's based on the samples I have seen so far, although the video samples I have viewed are pretty darn good.

Seem to be all "previews" by major reviewers so far, though the concept is very attractive - its on my camera watchlist, along with the SX40 successor. The only thing I've seen where somebody actually used FZ200 showed the RAW output is very good (unfortunately his handheld 600mm shot is a sunny day shot that any sz would handle.) He also says (doesn't show) that the JPEG processing overdoes noise reduction badly and wiped details that are there in RAW. Canon has been very good with JPEGs.

So, FZ200 sounds great, but I wouldn't jump on it too quick.

Re: The successor of SX40 HS announced next week or 14 days :)

The sx50 hs sounds good but there was no need to push the zoom to 42x. I would be shocked if it is not as good as the 40.

Regarding the FZ 200 i wouldn't put much weight into the images seen so far as there is a firmware update in the wings so until that happens comparisons are not worth much.

The FZ 200 is targeted at a completely different consumer anyway, they are not involved in the zoom race probably because they understand theres only so much that can be accomplished with a small sensor camera.

They are focusing on tweaking what they have and holding onto the crown of the camera for enthusiest title.

The Canons are much much more user friendly and will sell way more units because Panasonics always have limited availability and good luck finding one in a store.

Thank god for the bigger LCD and pixel increase, the SX 40's was terrible to say the least. Wonder if the 50 will come with raw instead of whats needed to get that in the 40. It will be a major mistake if it doesn't and it always loses points because of it.

42x sounds great to me. On the SX40 35x wasn't enough, I had to use digital zoom for this

I doubt it. RAW seems to be limited to Canon's higher-end cameras. You can get RAW using CHDK, so it is not a technical limitation. It's a pure target audience & cost differentiator. Unless enough of the cameras the SX50 HS competes with also have RAW, I don't see any reason for Canon to add it. And I think the Panny FZ200 is aimed at a notch above the SX40's price point ($600 vs $350).

Higher res LCD and viewfinder are the main things I'm hoping for in a refresh. HDR would be nice.

Guardianflash,

How do you get such wonderful images when into the digital zoom range. Every time I try it, they look noticably worse. How far into the digital range did you go? Any other secrets?

Re: The successor of SX40 HS announced next week or 14 days :)

I've used the TC (teleconverter) option on the SX40 to increase the zoom from 35x to either 52.5x (1.5 TC) or 70x (2.0 TC). I think this is also a digital enhancement, but to me the results are very good. I have the TC option set up as the shortcut button on the SX40, and pressing it repeatedly cycles through 1.5x, 2.0 and back to no magnification etc. It's very easy to use.

I only view images on a HDTV. I have not used the regular digital zoom (that I think goes to 140x).

raywes - I don't own either a Canon SX40 or a Panasonic FZ200 but am looking at both, although I will wait to see what the SX50 offers when it comes out. I did note that at http://www.imaging-resource.com you can compare the SX40 with the Panasonic FZ150, the predecessor to the FZ200, over a wide range of identical photos at various isos. Just go to cameras and then to compare images and pick the 2 cameras for side-by-side comparison. After viewing almost every photo at every iso my feeling is that the FZ150 clearly seemed to have the best images regardless of the iso used. Of course, this is only my opinion. From what I have read from most observers, the FZ200 seems to have even better quality photos than the FZ150, but this has not been confirmed by a major camera review forum as of yet.

I looked at the exif, it says digital zoom 2.5

I might have used burst mode and had saturation and sharpness up. No post processing.
