PowerShot SX40 HS OR Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM XPOST

Hello All,
I have a Canon T2i and my everyday lens is the EF
28-135mm
f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

My kids are both doing fall sports that make me want a better zoom. I asked DH for the 70-300 for my birthday and he suggested getting the SX 40 since it's smaller/easier to carry and around the same price.

I'm a hobbyist at best and can't say I'm good with a lot more than using the automatic features of my camera. Would love any feedback about this...is he right? Any help/opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Stephanie

I also posted this in the lens forum but my DH thinks I should ask in this forum too!

Stay with your DSLR

Stick with your request for the 70-300.

The SX40 although a good camera, it just is not a good camera for sports/action photography.

I agree. Having both the SX40HS and a 20D the speed of the 20D

outperforms the sx40. The weight of the sx40 is a joy to carry about. I generally use the 100-400 tele and it can become a pain to carry though. The 70-300 should be considerably lighter.

I have a Tamron AF 28-300 F3.5-6.3 LD IF 185D lens that is used with the 20d on occasion and it weighs as much as the sx40hs by itself. Would be willing to part with it as it doesn't get as much use as the 100-400 that's used for bird/wildlife pix.

T2i

You can get some keepers with the SX40 but the T2i would net you many many more keepers. I have both cameras and my SX40 found a secure home with me, but for sports, save yourself some frustration and stick with your T2i.
Now that being said, you should read this recommendation.

Good Luck and have fun.

Re: T2i

If you're shooting mainly in good daylight, and not working for Nat. Geo., you should be very happy with the results you are able to get with your SX40. I am still amazed at the IQ capabilities of it. My frustrations lie in the disappointing quality of the EVF, and the LCD, to a lessor degree. Shots always end up better when viewed later on the computer, then they appear on the LCD review. Many, many keepers.

Now shooting sports is another story. But other than for fast action sports, the SX40 is a real winner.
