Canon G1 X

Can anyone tell me whether the canon G1 X offers multi area focus points? I'm used to having this on my other cameras and presumed my newly purchased G1 x would have this option. As far as I can see it's only available in auto mode but not in program mode, am I missing something or does the camera not offer this? If not I wonder why not. I'd be grateful for any comments from owners of this camera.

I am not quite sure what you are asking. A camera can only focus using one autofocus point at a time. Just like our eyes can only look/focus on one thing at a time.

Have you read the manual? The G1X has 1-point AF (any position is available, fixed center or Face Select and Track). It's likely that in program mode your G1X is currently set to "fixed center" AF mode, but you want it set to "any position". Just set it to the "any position" AF mode, or whatever it's called.

I suggest that you ask this same question on the Canon forum and you may get a quick response from someone that has and uses a G1X.

On other cameras it's referred to as multi-area AF system where the LCD gives several focus points simultaneously to give a broader reading than just a single focus point, for situations where the light readings are for broader and less specific areas. I hope I'm making sense.

Yes I've done that, it's called flexi-zone, but it makes no difference, you still have to move it manually and you still have the one focus point. As I said, in auto this gives multiple focus areas but not in P mode. I'm thinking the canon doesn't offer this in P mode but not sure why.

I'm not saying I'm not happy with the camera, It takes superb shots, I'm just exploring all its possibilites and querying some of its differences, but I love the camera.
