"The Guard" showed up today, tamed the %@#$@ video button

I received a package today from Rick Luther containing one of his "The Guard" widgets for the NEX7. It took all of five minutes to install - it's a custom made metal grommet that mounts in the video button hole of the rubber cover. You gently peel back the cover, press the grommet in to the hole in the rubber cover and press the cover back down.

Very simple and very ingenious. I need to use a pen cap or a key to press the video button now, people with smaller fingers or fingernails can probably do it without tools. I never use video mode on my NEX7, so this is totally acceptable to me.

I like it! Well worth the $20 to me.

I'm not sure if links are allowed, so simply Google "The Guard Luther NEX7" for his website. (I have no financial interest in this, I'm just a very satisfied customer.)

How do you peel back the rubber grip without destroying it? I thought it was glued on.

Nope, not glued - taped using a reusable mounting tape. If you don't touch the tape with oily or dirty fingers it stays tacky. The tape stays on the body, the rubber peels right up.

Mine is as secure now as it was before.

Gentley pull back and you will notice a small tab (left top corner) when you reinstall gently push the tab back into the slot. Perfect fit and looks like you never touched it. Now NO MORE UNWANTED VIDEO"S.

Sorry if this has been asked before - anyone know if this will work on a 5n? I hate the video button placement!

Yes, you can take movies when you want. Just press the button more intentionally.
Many photographers of all shapes & sizes were part of a "beta" testing program.

The present "Guard" is the 4th prototype. Try it, you'll like it. It's very shiny!! RL

Can the guard be removed without harming the body or leaving an undesirable residue?

I don't see any reason why not - no modifications are made, it's sized to precisely fit the hole in the rubber.

I'll have to try pressing with the "meat" of my thumb - I couldn't find a good way of doing it, but I didn't spend a lot of time trying either.

The rubber grip/cover section that needs to be peeled in order to install the ring - is it the same section that people have complained would come off on its own after some use?

See "Instructions" at "Guard" site. I think some people have had an issue with

the rubber cover at the front of Nex. I can't imagine having an issue with rear rubber covering because of the two "tabs". Hope this helps. rl

That makes sense. Any idea if they would free-ship to Canada? I can find out I guess.

Sorry - but no - there's no rubber grip to peel back and stick this under on the NEX-5N. NEX-5N users have to involve some glue or other trick to stick something over the video button.

you guys with the 7 got an elegant fix - i'd sure pay $20 for a clean fix [no glue] for my 5n. i guess it's impossible to get a firmware fix like 2 clicks to activate? - oh well

The entire NEX7 community owes Rick a big thank you - because now that he's developed this great solution, Sony will undoubtedly come out with a firmware update that allows you to disable the video button. It's the way of the world...
