D3100 refurb and tele lens questions

A local camera shop is offering some Nikon D3100 cameras for $399 including the kit lenses. The cameras are refurbished. This sounds like a good offer. How is Nikon on the quality of refurbished gear?

For a budget telezoom, would anyone recommend the Nikkor 55-200 or should I look for something else?

Re: D3100 refurb and tele lens questions

One of my friends has a D3100 and likes it quite well. The $399 deal is pretty good. About half of my gear is refurbished and everything looked and worked like new, and all is still working flawlessly to this day.

The 55-200VR is not a bad lens for the money. It was one of the first tele lenses I ever owned, and it does a decent job for the money. Focus is a little on the slow side, and it has a plastic lens mount if I remember correctly, but it will do a nice job for most shooting situations. Cameta has refurbs for $134 and free shipping...if you are on a budget, I don't think you will do much better with any other lens (or any other store).

D3100 deal is good, and I would recommend the 70-300mm ed non-vr if you wanted more reach. If you wanted to do some indoor shots, though, get the 55-200.

Be aware that the non-vr 70-300 Nikon will not autofocus on the D3100.
