What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

I used to be a regular on his blog site. He has added two entries in the last year. What has happened to him?

I miss his participation too. One version I 'heard' online is that he has a job which prevents him from online participation and/or he's so busy with that job that he doesn't post and/or he's chosen to NOT participate much online.

But he still posts occasionally on Facebook if not on his blog.

I believe he mentioned either here or on his blog that he had a new job working for Apple and wouldn't have much time for the blog for awhile.

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

According to his blog, he was banned from the dpreview forums (a while ago) because one of the pictures he posted from China (a cultural shot showing their taste in certain "foods" that some dpreview subscribers found offensive; the shot was of a dog being cooked for a meal). I won't post the link to the relevant blog page here since it might get me banned (the blog page has the photo on it), but you can easily find it by googling the terms "carl rytterfalk banned dpreview".

No, that's not a recent cause, that was AGES ago. He was quickly re-instated and posted here for years I recall after that incident.

Sandy,

Thanks for the clarification. I did notice, after I posted, that the blog was referring to some event from back in 2005. Glad to hear they reinstated him, and I hope he is doing well.

I recall that there was massive write-in campaign to DPReview, in effect, "Bring back Carl....." LOL

I missed that incident.

Being banned for showing a dog being cooked!!

I have seldom heard anything sillier. Was Phil vegetarian?

I mean can you cook a cow, hen, pig or goat ... then you can cook a dog.

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

The photos were from his time living in China. I recall they were pretty graphic.... and sad. Being a dog owner ('Chinese Crested Dog' breed at that) I still think of them sometimes! That and all it takes to get 'banned' is a strong complaint or two.. at least in the timeframe, dpreview had the tendency to ban readily upon complaint(s).

I recall some years ago people in the US were horrified to learn that some coats imported from China were made with dog hair detail (fur on collars or hoods for example). Yet most people don't think twice about rabbit fur detail... people are strange...

And that written as a meat-eater, occasional fur-wearer....

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

All this time I thought that his protest about the astronomical price of the SD1, as well as his criticism of the bug-ridden SPP, cost him his Sigma sponsorship, so he simply let his site lie fallow.

Has he even done any hobby-type posting of any photos on his site recently? I thought it was an occasional comment in a thread or two and that was all.

I hope he is doing well, wherever his career is taking him!

Life has happened.

Last I heard he was busy with his Job and family. But it is certain that he's not lost his love for the arts.

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

I'm sure the last statement is true, Chunsum, both he and his wife.

I've noticed that one or more friends of his whose weblogs I used to follow from Sweden also have dropped off. It may be a passing custom thing, or just that people have to work ever a bit more in present times.

All of them are young families, as well.

Clive

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

I miss him too, a lot. He made feeling more comfortable with Sigma cameras because he was really "family" in his posts and videos.

For a time, I wanted to start the same kind of blog with my wife.

But ... as much as I enjoy Sigma cameras, I sometimes do not enjoy at all those very cameras. I can't make a propaganda blog about something who is not reliable and can be largely bashed worldwilde (banding, battery life, SPP, no ACR support ...).

In + doing this kind of blog is a HUGE amount of work, especially at the start, finding the style, the audience ... It is a huge work. Among the years it need a very serious server, that cost money ...

So ... not for me. Should be paid for that.

So, if Carl get his "sponsorship" fraged because he was (and it was just to be) p* ed about the SD1, SPP and the lens efficiency on this camera ... I do think he was right to kill his blog. If I were him, I would have erased the blog.

When doing this, you sometime "lie". You lie about a product because you need to prove it is good, even if it is not that good. I do not know Carl personally but I'm sure, absolutely sure that he is not a liar. It is not in his nature at all.

So, if Sigma give ya a SD1 and ask you to say it is good ... and it is not good at all, you speak the truth, and he did.

Carl is unique, it was a time, it was a venture. Are we nostalgics ? Am I nostalgic ? Yes. When a thing is comfortable we tend to see it as a milestone in our life's and when it is gone we miss it. That's life.

It is a "death 2.0" and a very strange feeling.

Before he stopped updating he did mention being very busy with his now job.

Hopefully other priorities have just kept him too busy to spend time on the blog and when things cool down he'll resume, either posting on Sigma things or something else.

I very much enjoyed his website and videos, his enthusiasm backed up by the images and easy to follow introductions got me interested in Foveon in the first place.

1) Got fed up with Sigma
2) Changing nappies
3) Censored by employer...

Hoping it is 2. Afraid it is 1 and 3.

Re: Nothing since February 13

His last blog post was February 9. His last reply in that post was February 13. That post now has 195 replies. The last one in August. And Carl has not even answered one since February 13.

So - I would say that this is more than just lack of time.

I have met him once - when he was in Stockholm - representing Sigma at a photo fair. He is an extremely enthusiastic guy. And he has high demands on his tools.

I guess that, apart from him being occupied with job and family, he has lost some of the reasons for enthusiasm.

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

I corresponded with Carl this Summer, it sounds that he and Linn are well but that life simply has taken his focus elsewhere than spending time on his site and these forums. I can certainly understand that, and will simply continue to wish him and his lovely wife the best

Re: What has happened to Carl Rytterfalk?

Life? Outside of this web forum? Preposterous!

What could be more fun that chewing over the same issues, bringing back variations on the same viewpoints, word smithing and cheese paring as art?

In case anyone actually reads this comment, don't take offense, please. Some of that is of course part of the process. Look where it's taken the discussion of a unified theory of everything in even loftier circles. It's just that after a while, worrying the same bone for a scrap of meat, (or for vegetarians, scraping the same sweet potato skin for a bit of flesh), becomes less satisfying, and as has been pointed out, pales by comparison to life outside this friendly little cyberspace. As founders and other stalwarts bring back various exotica from new experiences between equipment and reality, I suspect we'll see folks return from time to time. Even I.

Kindest regards,
