Hello

Here are some photos taken on my new D5100. It's the first SLR I've ever owned, so I very new the whole thing. Don't be too harsh in your critiquing.

I took them all using M mode beause I'm trying to learn how to really "work" the camera.

I have heard many people say you can't capture great images on the D5100 or that it's for "soccer moms." Hopefully these will show that not only does it have a great sensor and amazing colour, but there is enough manual control to get exactly what you want.

I really don't think it should be thought of as a "beginners SLR," despite what the price tag might suggest. Nikon has done a great job with this camera and I'm a proud owner :)

Show me some of your D5100 pics!

Could you resize your pictures a bit smaller?

First, where have you "heard many people say you can't capture great images on the D5100"? Sounds like BS.

Second: you don't think it should be thought of as a beginner's SLR. Nikon has done a great job with this camera, and you're a proud owner. ARE YOU RETARDED? Your very title says it's your first SLR.

Third: why are your pictures so small? Did you even look at your own post?

Well, it may be his first post on DPreview as well. The pictures are too small.

Hi,

I wrote this recently: "The D5100 is a great camera capable of taking stunning images, even with the kit lens. If it is a steep learning curve, then there are some great books. The two I continue to recommend, and which I read when I first moved to a DSLR, are:

1. Michael Freeman’s The Digital SLR Handbook, which deals with every aspect from equipment, via technique to display.

2. Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition: How to Shoot Great Photographs with Any Camera.

Finally, chose and train yourself on a selected image software package. I use Capture NX2 and others prefer Photoshop Elements or Lightroom. The final image really does come alive with good post process technique.

Enjoy what is a great camera and from your images great photographic playground."

Your images are also a great start. I hope this helps.

I've heard it mentioned on posts on Flikr and other places

This doesn't make any sense. My first SLR could have been a D3X. Just because it's my first SLR doesn't automatically make it's a beginner one. I'm saying two different things:
1. I'm new to SLRs
2. Other people think of the D5100 as a beginner's camera.
3. ARE YOU RETARDED?
Third: why are your pictures so small? Did you even look at your own post?
I saw it in the preview but assumed they would go normal size when I actually posted.

Obviously you don't get it.

and here I was commenting on the post of rhlpetrus that dispels the image of the forum abounding with bad manners and bullies.

Hi

got the same camera for nearly a year now, congratulations!

5 years ago you probably could not buy for any money in the world a camera that good!

This camera amazes me and my friends every day, many times people ask me"no flash?" As long as there is a candle burning you can go without flash but as always, good light=low ISO is always the best, but night market photos at ISO 3 200 are still incredible good.

The standard kit lens is very good (equal most times to super hyper expensive primes) and light!

Try the 18-105 vr (!!!!), this is one of the best lenses in the world ever made.

Have fun with your Nikon.
