SX160, f3.5 and a 16 megapixel sensor. Oh dear!

SX500 looks interesting.

Kudos to Canon for moving the frame-assist button away from the thumb grip. So annoying to hit it by accident.

Looks like there may not be a viewfinder on there. That would be bad - dealbreaker for me, most likely.

Can't wait to see specs on this one.

SX500 looks interesting. It does not seem like a direct successor to SX40, more like a different product line, i.e. an ultra-zoom that is more "pocketable". It seems there is no viewfinder, which contributes to the smaller size. I normally don't use viewfinders, so the removal for me would normally be a welcome "addition" (sic), that being said I realize that framing a shot with a 30x zoom without a viewfinder could be difficult.

The lens doesn't look great though - it appears it starts at F3.4. 35mm equiv is probably 24-720 (or 28-840, but I doubt this one).

There seems to be a new shooting mode on the mode dial (both SX500 and SX160) between "P" and "AUTO" - my brain insists it says "LIVE".

Really curious about the specs and dimensions (compared to SX40).

I still have my SX110IS, 9MP, 10X and starts at F2.8 -- takes great photos outdoors, but really needs flash inside; while it of course needs flash indoors, I mention that explicity because it's a pain with a 10 second wait for the flash to recycle, otherwise, great IQ sharpness in general. Video is aweful though.

Looks like you got it right. Definitely not a successor to the SX40. Since the price for this one is about the same as the current price for the SX40, why would anyone buy the SX500?

Definitely not a successor in not having the SX-40's Digic 5.

All these super-zoom cameras are nothing but toys, none of them are really a serious camera. I got through with that!, before it even really started good.

Then why did you bother to look at this thread? Is this just an opportunity for you to bash the people who don't have your standards for a "serious" camera?

Your first sentence is condescending but hardly your first post like that.

Your second sentence is simply incomprehensible.

I have to ask, as others, why do you post about things that don't matter to you?

Re: Canon SX160 and SX500IS

Now if they had an updated SX110IS, still with a 10x zoom, and a bump to 16MP and kept the same FStop range with a larger sensor like the Sony RX100, AND kept it powered with AA's AND had a faster flash recycle time [like
