***MC 275--The Compressed Landscape***

Thanks Rich for hosting the previous MC and doing such a fine job. There were some really fine entries and great participation as well.

The topic for MC 275 is 'The Compressed Landscape". Compressed landscapes are those shot with a long telephoto lens. I will use some leeway in judging entries because I know not everyone has a collection of bird lenses like me. The focal length used though should produce the compressed look and there shouldn't be prominent foreground interest.

Rules

1) Enter up to 3 photos from any camera taken at any time. Let us know about equipment, settings and processing if you like.

2) The winner chooses the next mini challenge theme and selects the next winner and so on...

3) Please post your entries by replying to this original post rather than under someone else’s post - and change the subject line to the title(s) of your images or something like that to separate your picture posts from comments that someone may make about your post.

4) As usual, exhibition entries are encouraged, if you have interesting images to share beyond your three entries, or should you feel you are not able to host the challenge in the event that you win.

5) All entrants should check the results of the challenge and be ready to jump in with the next competition if they are the winner.

6) PLEASE feel free to make as many comments as possible. This adds to the fun and keeps people coming back.

7) The challenge starts now and closes for entries and exhibits on Tuesday, August 21, 10 pm, Central Daylight Savings Time.

As always, have fun.

Jolene

Hi Gary

I'm going to consolidate my comments for your three exhibits right here. The castles are very good but the Bryce Canyon shot is excellent. It's got that nice layered look with the mountains compressed in the background. I didn't have a sample with mountains because you know I live when it's pretty flat. I'd like to go to Bryce Canyon someday--I've seen such very good pictures of the area and it looks beautiful.
Thanks for posting.

Jolene

Re: ***MC 275--The Compressed Landscape***

This is a hard one Jolene. How much zoom do your bird lenses get? I just bought a HX100V with a zoom of about 810 mm, replacing my darling H5 that wore out finally. And no foreground interest? I will have to go out and shoot something new and see how it goes. Probably this weekend.

Not as hard as it sounds

Hi Colleen,

My everyday bird lens is 420mm. You could get a compressed effect easily with the H5 and you undoubtedly have some compressed landscapes in your archives but just never called them that. Seems I remember one with a great big sun in it, over the highway perhaps.

Probably anything around 100mm or over would work, as long as you are focusing on a more distant object. Here is one at 99mm:

Somehow I doubt that I have explained it well enough. Where is Jerry Curtis? He's a big fan of compressed landscapes:).

Jolene

I see...

...that some others have posted shots. That might help more than my explanation. Although Rich has examples taken with mega mm, Amateur Sony Shooter's are at focal lengths more available to the non-bird-lens folks.

You could really have some fun with this with your new camera.

Ernest's First.

Hi Jolene. Firstly congratulations on your win, well done. Don't know if this is a landscape, but it shows telecompression ;-). Shot with my 500mm. The distance between the cars was far greater than the shot shows, about 200 meters between the rear & front car. Rear car from me, about 300 meters. Shot at F32

Eucalyptus Trees

Regards.
Ernest.

Re: Bryce Canyon (exb)

Brings back Memories. I've been there several times and find it's very hard to capture shots there for some reason.
