50mm or EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens for portrait

Hello everyone I need your help again

I want to buy one on those lenses 50mm 1.8 or Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens
For my 650d coz I like to shoot portrait

I know the price difference is huge but I am willing to get the 24-105 to try the L series everyone is talking about

So my question is , will the 24-105 mm when set at 50mm will be as good and sharp as the 50?? Or the two are not comparable coz of the apature size??

Thanks and sorry if my question is not so smart

Nice day

Canon EOS Rebel T4i (EOS 650D / EOS Kiss X6i)

If you set the 50mm-only lens at f4 or a smaller aperture (bigger number such as 5.6, 8, 11)the pictures will beidentical withthose taken on the zoom lens set to 50mm and the same aperture.

The 50mm-only lens allows wider/bigger apertures, for use in lower light or reduced depth of field, and easier focus in low light.

The zoom has image stabilization, so if the subject stays still, you can use the zoom at slow shutter speeds without blurry results because the camera moves.

The 50mm-only saves enough money that you can buy hundreds of prints of the portraits you take.

The zoom allows you to take a much wider assortment of types of portraits, with more or less peopleint he shots, and better control over perspective.

The 'nifty fifty' (aka the plastic-fantastic) has a lot of virtues. It equates to a good portrait length on a crop camera, and with its wide aperture you can certainly do things with it at f2 or f2.8 that you won't be able to do with the 24-105. Just don't expect it to be perfect, because it isn't. The design is quite old, and while it will be agreeably sharp in the middle of the frame you can expect some softness in the corners, especially at wide apertures. Also it's not USM nor does it have IS. Nonetheless, it's very cheap, and it's always worth having one.

One other thought: the new 40mm might also be worth thinking about. Its focal length isn't quite as good for portraits as the nifty-fifty's (64mm equivalent as against 80mm equivalent) nor is it as fast. Nonetheless it's still faster than the 24-105, it's long-enough for portraits, it's STM, and it will go very nicely with the 650D.

That sounds as I'm dissing the 24-105 (of which I have no experience). I'm not, but this lens is a good generalist. It's probably an unfair thing to say but the 24-105 is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. That said, it is a very useful and flexible lens indeed, and could certainly be used for portraits.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply , it seems the 50mm 1.8 is what I need also now I am thinking of checking the 85 mm 1.8 as well , I don't want an all around lens now but I am after a very good portrait lens .

Canon make 3 great portrait lenses

Canon's three best all-around general purpose portrait lenses for photographers who, for instance, shoot portraits for magazines and directories and hanging on office walls and giving to granny are:

For full frame cameras like the 5D -- the 24-105 EF f4 stabilized lens.

For so-called crop (1.6) cameras, the personality of the photographer comes into play. The 17-55 EF-S f2.8 is the best lens for the people who lean back, and the 24-70 f2.8 EF lens is for the people who lean forward.

The overall best all-around.... portrait lens for a crop Canon camera is not made by Canon. It is the new Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 stabilized lens.bos for all sorts of final results.

That takes care of allaround use. For specialty shots, there are lens/camera combinations.

Portraiture is difficult.

Off course when it comes to the lower f number ...in. A lower light out door photographers prefer 50mm sum 1.2 will stand up is one of the best lenses for a sharper image and pick up all the lights in lower light Scenery haven’t said that your Lens are capable of producing beautiful sharp picture if you set up your camera to the right Aperture and shutter speed of course and exposure

I think the combo of the 50mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 would be a great way to start.  You'd have your choice of 80mm or 136mm (equiv) lenses with both able to give a shallow depth of field, and for not much money.

I'm going to guess that after 8+ years, the OP has moved on.

Ha ha, I didn't even notice that I was replying to an eight-year-old post.
