Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

They seem to like it very much...they define it as an "expert dslr at the price of an entry level one", or something akin to that (I haven't the copy with me at the moment)

The major pluses were the improved jpeg engine and the faster AF (though they tested it with the 18-55 DAL lens, it apparently delivered better results during long bursts)

Cheers,

AlainCo

Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

Here is the conclusion of the test :

le K30 est une petite révolution : ce reflex grand public a toutes les caractéristiques d'un expert. On pourrait craindre que certains point sont sacrifiés sur l'autel des contraintes budgétaires, il n'en est rien : tout est au niveau.

Le capteur ne fait "que" 16mpx, certes, mais il les fait très bien : mieux vaut 16 bon Mpx que 24 mauvais !

K30 is a small revolution: this digital SLR camera have all the characteristics of an expert. We could think that some points are sacrificed on the altar of budget constraints, but it's not : everything is on a good level.

The sensor does "only" 16mpx, indeed, but it does it very well : better have a good 16 mpxl than a bad 24mpx ! (1)

The AF test is very good too, 17 shot in focus, 2 OOF (when the K5 had make 14 IF, 2 OOF)

Final note : 5/5

(1) : this shoulf be related to the D3200 test, the Nikon was rated at 3/5, because of a crappy jpg engine.

Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

Yes they do like the K 30.

Their test summary reads:

"The K30 is a real revolution. This 'general public' reflex has the specifications of a pro.

One would fear that certain key options would have been sacrificed due to budget restrictions, but this isn't the case. Everything meets the mark.

Sure the sensor is 'only' 16Mpix, but it is a good one. Better to have 16 good mpixs than 24 bad"

Re the autofocus:
The AF is quick and to our mind accurate even if we only used the 18-55mm lens.

Operation noise: The general trend is for DSLRs to make less noise. The K30 tends to be a little noisy.

The noise issue is the only real negative report.

The ' Chasseur d'images' (The image hunter) is a French photo mag which has been going for as long as I can remember.

In the same edition they also tested the Optio WG11 GPS and other 'off road' cameras.
The Optio gets the highest marks as does the Sony DSC TX20;-)

Thank you everybody for providing translation.

We've seen such tiny improvements from one generation to another, for me it's such good news to see the AF improve so much (cue audience approval/applause sounds). I'm looking forward to what new goodies the K3 brings with it in September announcements.

Is the magazine implying that some other company has brought out a bad implementation of Sony's 24 mp sensor?

What company would that be?

That doesn't seem to mean much... Both Pentax and Nikon have their variants of the Sony sensor design so why can't they put their name on it also?

Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

Come on, how difficult is it to order Sony to put a Nikon stamp on the outer casing? It proves nada IMO.

No, there is no mention about that.

In the D3200 test, the tester thinks that the sensor is a "budget" Sony exmor, not exactly the same than the NEX7 or A77.

Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

I returned the K-5 because of the bad AF specifically in low (and especially in) artificial light. Do they specifically comment on these conditions?

Although I've been using my m43 equipment of late, I'd love to buy a body for all my wonderful old (i.e. LTD's) Pentax glass.

Well this is good news and good to see Pentax offering improvements on tried and tested technology. I'm looking at the body with an 18-135mm WR lens. This is my first foray into SLR territory. With this combination I should have most bases covered.

Re: Chasseur d'Images K-30 review

Can anyone explain this listing obtained by simply doing a Google price search for Pentax K-30? (found on page 5 of the search in google 'shopping')

http://think.winbootsugg.com/pentax-weather-sealed-digital-slr-k30-lens-kit-white-camera-amp-photo_p7700.html?offer_id=B0082OJ2Z0

They also list it body only for $212 plus change.
quite a price.
The google page lists the sellers name as "Mac Reichen"
