just learning but tring to answer some of the question asked before the release was anounced.
so far, i LOVE this thing!!!!!!
but sticking to reality,

1).the EVF has absolutly NO distortion in the corners. in fact evry micron of the evf is crystal clear.

2).shooting on "fine" at 1600 x 1200. my fingers cramps up from pressing the shutter Before the buffer fills enough to slow the camera down to write.

-In raw i can get several shots off before it slows down to write, but even then its only about 3 seconds between shots
(then the finger shuts down before the camera does!)

Please ask away!!!

trying to figure out how to answer your questions and conduct your "tests" is a great way to learn what this thing can do.!!

Re: 7Hi: My findings so far.

Would this finger cramp thing be more pronounced on the 7Hi than on the 7i?

not sure, how strong is your finger???
maybe start with the 7I then once the muscles are adjusted, upgrade.
you dont want to just jump right to the 7Hi and hurt yourself like i did.

and as always, be sure to check with your doctor before beginning a new photography regimine!

Thanks a whole lot sir.

By the time I need to upgrade the Minolta Dimage 27Wi will be a frightening machine ; so I'm going on a finger weight lifting program right now.

AF Speed?

I'm really interested to know how well the autofocus works and how much lag time there is between shots, etc. Have there been even further improvements to the speed of the AF?

I have a Olympus D460Z that my wife likes to use for simplicity's sake but she hates the fact that it takes so long for the camera to take a photo after she presses the shutter button and how long it takes for the camera to prepare for the next shot. I bet you know what that is like coming from a D490Z.

Have you found situations where you still feel the AF isn't quite up to par? Do you think my wife would still have complaints trying to get those candid shots of the kids?

RAW file write time?

Are you therefore saying that the camera is only taking "about 3 seconds" to write the 9+MB RAW files to the CF card? Are you using "high speed" CF card or "Micro-Drive"?

Also, would you mind telling how much you paid for your D7Hi, and whether that includes tax? Don't need to know where 'cause I'm in the U.K.

Thanks.

unfortunaty, since i am on a webtv unit not a computer any pic i post will be compressed down to 640x480. and as you can imagine, they dont look real good to computers.
i will try it borrow a puter soon so i can post a few.

using 4 and 8 speed cf cards, it seems to write the file in about 15 seconds but in "about 3 seconds" enough has been transferred to be able to shoot again.

"high speed" CF card or "Micro-Drive"?

Also, would you mind telling how much you paid for your D7Hi, and

i paid $1289.99(u.s. dollars) plus tax(6%) grand total of $1367.00. (u.s.d)
sorry, i dont know how to convert the currency for you.

got it at a small local shop i've been dealing with for years.

there is another shop in town selling them for the same price but unless you are a NIKON person, they dont treat you very well.

whether that includes tax? Don't need to know where 'cause I'm in
the U.K.

Thanks.

Hey trauma-hawk,

if I get you right, then the D7Hi uses the 64MB buffer in single shot mode too. That sounds great. I had some worries, that the D7Hi uses the buffer only in UHS-, bracketing or HI-Modes.

So I expect that a shot of a 2560x1920 photo in extra fine ore tiff mode does take 3 secs to write to CF too, doesn´t it?

I have a friend that works at Minolta and he says the Dimage 27Wi will take a picture when you blink - no finger required.

...I'm a bit puzzled; surely if it takes about 15 seconds to write a RAW file, at some point when the buffer is full it must start to take 15 seconds between shots, regardless of the buffer size. Still, it's not all that important.

Interesting. Shortly after I posted the question I checked the Web-site of my local photo shop. The D7Hi listed at £996 (U.K. pounds including 17.5% tax) the D7i is listed at £760, where it's been for some time now, so the new model is starting at a pretty hefty 30% premium. I don't think I will "trade up" unless the D7Hi comes down to about £800.

For what its worth £996 is about £848 before tax, which at the current $1.55 to the pound is about $1314. Pretty close U.S. and U.K. prices, that makes a change, U.K. is usually over priced relative to U.S..

Thanks again.

at 2650x1920 on super fine (only higher setting is RAW)

takes 28 seconds to write to the card, but almost instantly, you can shoot a second shot, wait a second, take another shot and so on and so on. untill you get to around 7 pics then it slows to aprox 3-5 seconds between shots.

this explanation any better???

if you have a "procedure" to get the answers you seek, let me know, i'm having a blast learning this thing.

i'm sure you are correct,

i cant say for sure because i go tired of pushing the shutter before i had to wait any longer than several seconds between shots.

hope it helps

i have no complaints, i can only compare it to my olympus.

it locks on prperly 99% of the time. and when it does have a problem, i just aim a few degrees left or right and it finds something to focus on.

never needs moved enough to alter your composiion just a hair or two. but like i said, that is rare.
i was shocked how easily it focuses in very low light.

to sum it up, the focus on the 7h is much better and faster than my oly and i never complained about the oly for a moment. if there was an issue with focus in the 7/7u/7i, it seems they fixed it on the 7hi.
either that or i just dont know how to spot an O.O.F.pic.

Yepp!

Thanks a lot, trauma-hawk, seems so that the D7Hi uses the 64MB buffer in all modes. That is what I wanted her to do - but with a Minolta cam, you´ll never know, if you get what seemes to be obvious to the consumer...

if you have a "procedure" to get the answers you seek, let me know,
i'm having a blast learning this thing.

I think that´s all for the moment. I´ve ordered mine on friday after I´ve sold my D7. But over here in europe I have to wait a while...
