Will EF-M lens work on DSLR?

I have a T3, any idea if the new EF-M 22mm STM f/2 lens can be made to work on it? Or would the extra adapters make it just as big as the 35mm f/2?

I'm moving to Queens in the near future, and really wish Canon made a 15mm pancake lens. That would make my T3 close to pocketable, and much less conspicuous as I explore the city. The 35mm f/2 is still too big to pocket, and not wide enough for the cavernous streets of Manhattan. I fear even 22mm would still be too narrow.

Unless they come out with something, I think I'll be forced to buy a NEX or 3/4 with pancake and relegate the T3 to niche macro and telephoto use.

Yes, it will after you hack the mirror and some other parts out of your DSLR...

Seriously, read the specs: what is the flange (registration) distance of the new M lens and your EF lens..?

Guessing (educated guess) that the answer will be no. The back of the M lens mounts much closer to the sensor, and is designed for a sensor to mount distance that is much shorter than that of EF and EFS lenses.

I suspect it was a serious question that deserves a serious answer. Perhaps not everyone is as knowledgeable as you and fully understands what flange distance means even if they had read the specifications ............?

No. The mirrorless has much shorter registration distance (back element to sensor) distance, which is one of the main reasons for mirrorless.

Doesn't the announcement say Canon introduced a new lens mount with the camera and lenses?

Re: Will EF-M lens work on DSLR?

Yes but Canon is also releasing an EF to M adapter. The reverse (M to EF/EF-S) can not be made though because M-mount lenses sit closer to sensor.

Pardon me, Milord, for offending your sensibilities. I shall sin no more.

C'mon, that's why there are glossaries (including the one on this site) and other sources. Not every question deserves a verbose answer that pretty much copies verbatim what's already out there.

No it definitely will not work and cannot be modified to work. As mentioned above, it would need to be mounted inside of the camera.

I'm moving to Queens in the near future, and really wish Canon made a 15mm pancake lens. That would make my T3 close to pocketable, and much less conspicuous as I explore the city. Unfortunately, there is no way to make a 15mm pancake lens for a DSLR. Instead one must use a large and cumbersome retrofocus (reverse telephoto) design as the back of the lens (back focus distance) can't be closer than about 40mm to the sensor.

More info can be found here: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/03/the-development-of-wide-angle-lenses

Unless they come out with something, I think I'll be forced to buy a NEX or 3/4 with pancake and relegate the T3 to niche macro and telephoto use.

Consider yourself forced.

I thought this was a good guide to street photography on a budget:

I honestly wonder how the Sony RX100 or Canon G1X would do for you as well ... street photography is a hyperfocal business in the first place.

I'm thinking EF-M to XL adapter.

With a stepper motor for focus I think that could be better than the electric focus system used which is not very accurate in it's operation (focus speed depends on speed of rotation of the focus ring but is not directly related to how far you rotate it). AF is disabled on the EF-XL adapter (ok, pro's don't use AF, do they ?) but amateurs like me think it could be useful, after all the standard lenses for the XL1s are AF.
Funnily enough, the image stabiliser does work on EF lenses.

Well, now, not unless they bring out the rumored negative length adapter...

I agree. Why bother to type a response?… unless of course the intention is to belittle a person for asking a simple question.

I’ll risk doing the same.  Why chime in on a nearly eleven year old thread?

No. They are not back-ward compatible. Canon made pretty sure you couldn't use one of their exclusive M lenses on their older DSLR technology.

It was a good move for them. It now forces us to buy RF tech.
