HX20v does jungle critters

Well I got a HX20v after some good reviews and some good results I saw.
... and I got her for less than I payed for my HX5, so I had to buy one ...

Here are her first shots outside the home.

They are mostly ISO 800 and 1/15 or slower handheld

Very pretty pics Joe. And the technical quality surprises me for the little sensor of the cam.

Marvelous! And in number 2, you did a great job of getting the camera to focus on exactly what you wanted it to focus on. Kudos!

I was amazed how well the HX20v is able to focus in low light / low contrast situations.

As usual if you shoot under not good situations there are few focus error pictures but over all for the first set of images Sony did a pretty good job with this camera.

ISO 800 1/6 sec handheld no flash 4x zoom

The 20 x lens is able to capture the same frame from up to 4 x as it does from 1 x and 1 cm distance.
So if you like macro shooting like I do you can use it up to 4 x.

The 1 cm minimum distance is not correct, you can in fact nearly touch the subject with the lens, just rest the lens barrel rest on your skin and tilt it to 45 degrees and see how well it focuses.

Very nice! You must have very steady hands to get sharp shots at such slow shutter speeds (1/6 in one case).

In low contrast situations and shady areas the 18 MP sensor of the HX20V looses and smothers detail.
With 50% reduction per side you have a quite astonishing 4.5 MP result.

Now add a little post processing (I use the free FastStone Image Viewer and with most the pictures above Gamma to .8 - .9, Contrast +10, Saturation +10 and Sharpness +15 - 18)

last of the HX20v jungle critters

looks like you enjoyed looking at them as much as we did capturing them.

I found them in one of our malls as an exhibition. They were behind smudged glass in their typical environment what mostly was not too well lit - except for the horned snake.

We did the best to shield the lens from the reflection of the glass and sure added to the smudging during the shielding.
When possible we used the glass as a mono-pod to stabilize the camera.
The HX20V did all the automatic measuring and setting.
We tried to give the pictures the feel as if they were shoot in the nature.
