Please recommend ND filter for Lieca 25mm f1.4

Hi guys, having not used ND filters before I'm wanting to get one for the 25mm so I can shoot it walk-around wide open in good light. Any reccomendations as to what strength would be the most useful if I was only getting one?

I was looking at the B+W 46mm 0.9 ND 103 Filter. Is this too strong or about right for my use? Not looking for slow shutter speeds per se just want to be able to shoot at 1.4 during the day.

Thanks!

I use a Hoya NDx8 for day time shooting. Works just fine.

I find that having something stronger than the 0.9 ND is helpful for stills -- especially if you really want to shoot wide open.

And if you plan on doing video, having something stronger is a great idea since it's a good practice to shoot video at 1/50th or 1/60th shutter speed.

I asked the same question and the answer seems to be ND8 (3 stop). I bought the Panasonic one which happens to be 3 stop and it works well enough.

If you're only going to get one, I think 3-stop is probably the best choice. Brand may not matter too much; I got one of the Panasonic ones for about $15, which seems fine, but feel free to spend more if you like. I mostly use mine for video, which is very forgiving. Even for stills, when I want f/1.4 I'm not concerned about maximum sharpness, so whatever slight degradation there might be with the cheaper filter doesn't bother me.

Regan,

Having not used an ND filter myself, I decided upon a 'Genus' Variable ND filter. It is adjustable from 2-8 stops, and gives me a better feel for what I need in a shot. Others will likely mention that these are not supposed to have the optical quality of a B+W ND filter or the high end Hoya's, but I've been pleased with my results thus far. No regrets here.

Thanks for the advice guys. Seems 3 stops is probably going to do the trick for me. I love this lens BTW. Really a joy on the OM-D.

Cool. Glad the 0.9 (3 stops) will work for you.

I do want to point out why it's not enough, though, for shooting wide open.

In bright sunlight, we'd expect an exposure of: ISO 160, f/16, 1/160th.

Let's we don't mind overexposing just a little -- so, 1/125th.

Then, let's make the shutter adjustments from 1/125th to...

1/250th (1 stop)
1/500th (2 stops)
1/1000th (3 stops)
1/2000th (4 stops)
1/4000th (5 stops)

Great, so now we can use those 5 stops on the aperture side, going from f/16 to ...

f/11 (1 stop)
f/8 (2 stops)
f/5.6 (3 stops)
f/4 (4 stops)
f/2.8 (5 stops)

So ... if you want to shoot wide open in bright conditions, you need 2 more stops, possibly 3. I find a 1.8ND very useful. (In this scenario, that gets us to ISO 160, f/1.4, 1/2000th.)

Where did you find a variable ND filter that fits the 25 1.4? I have one for my 50mm f0.95, but that's a 67mm thread.

I've just ordered a Polaroid variable ND filter in 46mm fit from Ebay (UK). A search revealed several makes and suppliers.
