SZ-10 photo.

I was hanging out for a SZ-31 but realised it had way more features than I needed so I grabbed a bargain SZ-10, there's not much posted anywhere about this camera so I'll pop this one in from a visit to the wetlands yesterday.

The water may have been too cold for the tortoises.

I can't say it's a great camera, the sensor is too noisy for that, but it does have that Olympus look I wanted and it came at a great price.

Interesting shot....

....was it really cold out there? Looks like the cormorant had been swimming. LOL

I like the shot!

Re: SZ-10 photo.

The SZ-10 still has a 14MP CCD (same as in my Stylus 9010?), but also an exceptionally bright 18x zoom lens for a pocket camera (f4,4 at the far end).

I was looking at the SZ-20 until the SZ-30MR came out, and I got it last Septermber. I do use the extra sensitivity from the BSI CMOS sensor and the dual-processor facilities.

But, particularly at a reduced price, the SZ-10 holds its own, as demonstrated by the examples shown in two posts so far in this thread.

The lens was a major factor in the purchase, words aren't my strength but despite the less than stellar sensor the SZ-10 performs fine, especially for the price. I also have a TG-610 which likely uses the same sensor and it doesn't get as good a result as the SZ-10, same noise but lens not as good IMO but like any camera, when resized for web use they're all good these days, pixel binning (or whatever it's called) takes care of the noise and still leaves plenty of size.

That shot was a straight crop but was too good not to post somewhere, I didn't see the tortoises till I got home.

It was only about 18C when that was taken, a coolish winter morning, way too cold for humans to even think of swimming.

Re: SZ-10 photo.

I also have an SZ-10... it is a neat little camera, which I've found works perfectly with my XZ-1 when I need that long telephoto (see below, taken from about 100' away at a baseball game, handheld, in the evening).

It was also useful recently when I was thinking about getting an SZ-31. Set myself to use the SZ-10 for a solid week, to see if I could really get to like the simplified non-PASM controls, as compared to the XZ-1. As it turned out, no, I personally am more comfortable with the XZ-1. But we are into individual preferences now. Both cameras are excellent and do exactly what they are supposed to do.

As for the noise from the SZ-10's small lens & sensor, well, it isn't much, unless you are in very low light -- and, after all, when you want a camera that fits so easily in a shirt pocket, what on earth do critics expect? For me, that little bit of noise is easily offset by the incredible telephoto and small form factor. As you pointed out, it's great value for the money!
