Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

Nex-7 coming tomorrow! As a long time Canon guy, and my dad before me, I have a lot of Canon Glass from FD to new EF and EF-S. Starting with the low cost Fotodiox for the FD glass. But a more difficult and expensive decision is how to best use the EF lens.

Does anyone have specific experience with this adapter and Canon EF 70-200 4/IS L, EF-S 18-55 2.8 IS, and/or the EF 100 2.8 Macro non-IS?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to contributing when I have some experience with the Nex-7.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I have at least six Canon "L' lenses and never gave a thought to this adapter. These Canon lenses are huge and the adapter is not yet autofocus. I'm not adverse to manual focus, so I have a combination of 'M' and SLR lenses to compliment the 24mm Zeiss and kit lens. I'll consider the Conrus when it is a mature product.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I can just confirm that it works fine with 100 f2.8 L IS. 70-200 f4 L IS should also be OK, but I checked only 70-200 f2.8 L IS II. Don't know about EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS.

I have a problem with some wide angle lenses - namely EF 24 f1.4 L II, Zeiss 21 f2.8 ZE, Zeiss 28 f2 ZE and Zeiss 35 f2 ZE with infinity focus.

Metabones sent me the answer that those problems are related to the thickness of the mount of NEX cameras and I should get some pictures from them how to try to repair it. Will post it when I got them.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

Thanks... The Metabones site shows the 70-200 2.8 as tested, but not the 4.0 or the macro. They just responded to the "contact us" on their website and said all the lens "would work" But I trust the experiences of people like you best of all.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

No problem. They actually have Zeiss ZE 21 on their site as compatible one too (tested by them, if they didn't remove it after my reporting) but as being said, my sample wasn't able to achieve focus to infinity with this Zeiss and other mentioned lenses in my previous posts. I think problems are mainly related to some WA lenses, so I wouldn't be afraid of 70-200 f4 L IS.
Maybe someone else can comment on 17-55 EF-S.

Otherwise, besides high price, this adapter is a joy to use with EF lenses. For those who can live without AF of course.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I have this adapter and it works fine with the 70-300L and the 24-70 (before I sold it). I also use the ZE100, ZE50, and the ZE21 all with no problems. But for some lenses I found I needed a little more distance between the bottom of the adapter and an L plate as some lenses didn't clear. The fix was this item from Hejnar. And a photo of the NEX w/Metabones-Hejnar and ZE21.

Nice setup. Which Hejnar is this?

This is his ebay store. There are two listings, one for the spacer, and one for the spacer plus L plate.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I just ordered another one, and guy from Metabones promised that he will check it and adjust it if needed for lenses that I had problem with focus to infinity. So the solution does exist, I guess I was just unlucky with my sample.

When I receive the new adapter, I will send them the old one for repair, and when it gets back, will try to sell it.

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I have been checking off and on for a couple of months now on availability of the Metabones Adapter. It is never in stock. Anyone have intel on when there will be a ready supply of the adapters?

Am I correct that IS will work on the Canon EF lenses? If so, how well? I have a DO 70-300 that I would love to try if the IS works well.

You should send them email that you want to order one, and I believe they will notice you soon.

IS works the same way it does with Canon bodies. Not sure however about compatibility with 70-300 DO, you should ask them.

Hope it helps.

re: experience with N7 + 70-200/4L IS via. Conurus
  • yes, the 70-200/4L IS works very well together with N7 & Conurus adapter, and was joy to use;

  • focusing fast and snappy - best when used wide open, but usable even with the iris was closed to f/8 (on a well it scene - MF suffers a lot on my N7: even with not too pronounced loss of light a critical focusing gets pretty tough);

  • also usable together with 1.4x pro300dg of Kenko;

  • however adding 2x MkII was too much of light loss coupled with increased FL to efficiently attain a critical focus free hand at 5.7x magn. (and of course utterly impossible at 11.7x) despite IS being pretty efficient on this lens!!

  • a word on how IS works (at least with FW version 03): two modes are possible;

  • when aperture is set wide open, the IS engages on the 1/2-press, like on any Canon EOS body;

  • however, it suffices to close an iris one step (depends on the lens, some allow as little as 1/3 stop, other 1/2 stop, and minority force a full stop) and IS will be ON all the time = eats a lot of battery fast, but it is a very welcome addition in functionality, as on N7 1/2-press cancels MF-assist magnification (alt least I didn't find a way to disable this behavior), which is exactly when one needs it most to work together IS and MF-assist !!

I wrote abt. my other obs. with Conurus on N7 quite a few times earlier:

Re: Nex-7 Metabones Coronus Adapter

I purchased a Metabones adapter for my EF lenses. I sent them an e-mail to notify me and within a few weeks, I got the email it was available to order. Even after I had received it in the mail, I just got another email last week stating they are ready to order if I want to purchase one. I posted a quick picture I took with my wife's NEX 5N and the 28-135 NON L glass...I also have a 70-200Lis and a 24-70L...also, can't wait to try out my 1.4 50mm Canon prime lens on my NEX 7 or the wifes 5N. If you search this forum, you will see the pic I took of the pig at 1/60 sec shutter...so, the IS is working on the adapter with the NEX.
