Seeking info re MF Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500 f/8 mirror lens

Please pardon me if I should have posted the following question in another forum, but "Konica-Minolta" seemed most appropriate: I recently bought a used Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500mm f/8 manual focus mirror lens from KEH. I have it mounted on an Olympus OM-D EM-5 body, and, given the new Olympus' surprisingly effective IBIS, have gotten some pretty decent handheld results in outdoor light.

Unfortunately, the lens was missing the rear-mounted screw-in UV filter that was part of the standard accessory filter kit originally included with new lenses. Question: I understand that, as with most drop-in or rear-mounted filters, the missing UV filter is factored in as one of the elements of the original lens design. In practice, is the optical performance of the Rokkor seriously compromised by lack of this filter? And secondly, can anyone suggest where I might inquire about acquiring the four-filter set and the metal key used for installing/removing the filter?

Thanks for any help of suggestions you can give.

Re: Seeking info re MF Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500 f/8 mirror lens

Your lens does not have rear screw on filters.. it used a filter draw. they drop in from the side. if by chance you got the lens with it org. hood cover.. look in there there should be a ND filter.. if push comes to shove you may be able to remove the ND - 4 stops I think and install a UV.. I almost never use the ND filter on this lens.. But if you push the ISO and run with the ND filter in place on a bright day it will yeald great shots. It is one of the sharpest Mirrors out there IMO.. Not only do you need the UV if you want the best out of this lens but the manual states that the filter must be in the right way The word Minolta has to be facing front or back. The say it makes a diffrince.

Re: Seeking info re MF Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500 f/8 mirror lens

Hi George:

Thanks for your reply about the Minolta Rokkor-X. However, the two of us seem to be talking about two very different lenses.

Have a look at this site, which features illustrations showing the lens along with the filter set and the key used to insert the five filters into the rear of the lens.

http://www.rokkorfiles.com/500mm.htm

Also, as far as I've been able to determine, there is no additional lenshood involved. The entire outfit should consist of
a) the mirror lens
b) the five filters
c) front and rear caps
d) filter key
e) black case.

Still seeking accurate info about this lens. So far, no one has really answered my question as to how seriously impaired the IQ will be without any filter inserted. Or if there's some place I can inquire about acquiring a replacement set of filters and the key. (Though it's starting to look like I'm just SOL.

I have one of these: And the information is correct: It comes with a tube case and strap, lens, filters and key, front and rear lens cap. Oh, and a manual.

Sorry for giving you the wrong info. I didn't read your post well enough. I was speaking of the Minolta auto focus 500mm mirror f8 lens..

I had one of the Rokkors. I recall reading somewhere that not having the rear filter in place had no adverse effect on IQ.
One of my faves with that lens on my Sony A850:

Re: Seeking info re MF Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500 f/8 mirror lens

To my understanding there are no problem that you miss the UV rear filter. The front filter tread are 77mm and much better idea as it protect the front element. When a filter between lens and sensor is taken away, you only reduce focal lenght with the tickness of the filter glass. For a wide angle this can change focus, but not for a long telephoto lens.

At Ebay today it is an offer of a rear filter for Rokkor 500mm 8.

You could buy it just for comfort.

Re: Seeking info re MF Minolta RF Rokkor-X 500 f/8 mirror lens

I have not tried to leave the filter out, on my 250 and the 800, but I do believe in the need to have it in to achieve the best results.

Light rays bend when entering another transparent medium. Look at a straight stick put into water. Minolta had several UV filters with the same screw in diameters, but as I vaguely recall from the price list, they specified a particular type of glass for these rear filters. That makes sense, but whether it is visible in a routine snapshot is undocumented.

A glass up front is rather like shuffling the lens elements (not quite, since it is planeparalell). It does definitely not, however, have the same effect as leaving it in the picture forming light path behind the lens.

A good empiricist should of course experiment. I do not, however, have time for that at the moment.

Answer from Norfoot.
In a 500mm mirror lens its less need to use the rear filter, but use it if its there. Any filter inside a lens or behind will be a part of the focal length. Most mirror or large lenses can change lenght when heatet and oposite in cold. Big lenses and normally mirror lenses has optical infinity before infinity mark. That can cover the change also when removing a buildt in filter. If you instead remove a filter as inside in a short focal lens as a 24mm wide, than you might block infinity untill you put filter back.
About mirror lens sharpness,: Most lenses from a camera producer is sharp. At the other side many from trading firms are not sharp. They are just cheap.
Of more than 20 bought mirror lenses I found Minolta, Olympus and RTM Tokina as superior. I know Canon FD is good also. Pentax reflex zoom 400-600/8-12 is sharp at 400 and get softer and darker at 600mm. Mirror lenses can easy be affected from side light. Use Always a long sunshade/lensshade for mirror lenses.

Here. Something did happen by error.

I wrote this list under but must have missed giving answer to a question

The Minolta RF 500mm8 is my most used over 300mm. Its very sharp when correct used with lenshood. You dont need to use the rear filter. Its a part of the optical focus, but most mirror lenses focus well past infinity. It will not give a problem. Because of having sharp mirror lenses I don't use much as the Sigma 50-500mm. I use mostly MINOLTA RF 250/5.6, RF500/8 or Olympus OM 500/8 RF.

If you have a good camera easy to focus manuell and in body picture stabilisation, than a good mirror lens is a handy solution for always in your bag.

The rear filter might be 39mm and than similar to Nikon and other. It dont affect sharpness, but it decrease the focal lenght with thickness of the missing filter glass. Teoretical it can disturb infinity, but mirror lenses use to focus well passed infinity because infinity change with temperature. I think all is in full order also with no rear mounted filter. Just remember to focus in camera also when "infinity" motives..! Always use a good (long) sunshade for mirror lenses.

You do realise that the OP asked this question in 2012 ( 11 years ago ! ) ?

And hasn't been on the forums since 2016 ( 5 years ago ! ) , And it was already a long dead thread then when you dug it up !

Zombie alert !

Assuming they are still alive , I would imagine they worked things out of moved on from then .

I'm guessing that's why while you've been posting in this thread these last few months , there's been no response to you.

The rear filter mounted on most 500mm8 mirror lenses will be newtral to optical quality if removed. A rear filter is only a part of the focal lenght with the thickness of the filter glass. On most mirror lenses infinity focus is set behind infinity. This mean if you can focus infinity or passed infinity without filter, than you don't need the filter mounted. If you need a dust barriere than keep the filter. I use the Mknolta Rokkor 250mm5.6 and 500mm8 without rear filter Also I use Olympus 500mm8 and Nikkor 500mm5 all without rear filters,- but with front protection filter 62mm, 77mm, 72mm and 122mm for 500/5.
