Replacing my sx1is

I use a canon 7D and happily used my compact canon sx1 IS until it broke recently (for the second time) for family snaps and hd family videos. Having used the 7D a lot I am finding the quality of the sx1 unsatisfactory ( fringing, noise etc). I was thinking of replacing it with another compact Like the Olympus pen with the larger sensor. However, I still like the handling of my old sx1, the flip out viewfider, the zoom etc and noticed the sx40 is much improved and the lelephoto shots I have seen don't seem to show much fringing. My question is, is the sx40 a good replacement and more sturdy than the sx1 or should I go for a large sensor compact? Please give me some input to sway me as I can't seem to make up my mind. Thanks.
