G1X - maintaining focus with screen shut

For me, this is one of those eureka moments as I was somewhat dissapointed when I discovered that the g1x was not able to maintain focus point when the screen is closed. This is only really relevent if you are doing long time-lapse and want to switch the the screen off to save power or, for example, startrails.

I now have a workflow which does allow this. It does require CHDK so if you are uncomfortable using CHDK on your camera then this wont apply.

You need to use a time-lapse script which must use the af_lock(1) function. I now use this script as it has proved to be better than the ones I had previously written

This is my workflow.

make sure the g1x is in maunal focus mode
select the timelapse script in chdk
start the time lapse (the camera will now focus)
pause the script by pressing shortcut button
you can now adjust the manual focus point using the wheel
release the script by pressing the shortcut button

you can now shut the screen and the focus point you have manully set will be maintained even though the g1x will default back to AF mode

when you open theb screen, the g1x will now be in AF mode, but the actual focus point you set earlier will still be maintained.

Thanks for the info - I'm looking forward to time lapsing with the G1X once it gets here. Thread saved.
