totaly stupid mistake - downloaded OS X recovery to ext. HD
it's late in the evening and I just made one huge , very stupid mistake. I thought I should download some extra back up recovery for my new imac and so I downloaded the OS X recovery to one of my external HD. Yes, I didn't read the red warning telling me it will delete all the data on the HD . All my data is backed up so I'm not too worried about that. THE PROBLEM IS that when I try to format the drive either on my mac or my windows laptop the drive doesn't show up. I've read now for an hour different forums how to find the drive and it's not in utilities, device manager, the drive is completely missing. When I connect it to either the windows laptop or imac I can hear the drive starting up but it just doesn't pop up in the finder , it's gone. Is there an easy way to fix this problem so I can just format the drive or is it ready for the garbage bag? Thanks for your advice. Gunther B.
So it doesn't show up in Disk Utility?
If not then try downloading Carbon Copy Cloner and open up the Disk Center and see if it appears there.
In Windows, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage and see if the drive is listed. Maybe it's not a partition Windows recognizes.
