Broken red ring on a "L" lens

The red ring on my 24-105L just snapped off. The lens is 4 years old and in great shape. Have any of you had this issue? If so, have you had a new one put on or did you fix it yourself? If you had Canon fix it, how much did this cosmetic surgery cost?

The same thing happened to mine. To "fix" it you will have to have the lens barrel changed (I called and asked). Not worth it to me. The lens still works without the red ring... :).

Wow, the whole lens barrel has to be replaced to get a new red ring? I figured Canon would be able to send out a ring you could snap on yourself. I think I will leave the lens alone as well, thanks for the advice. The only ā€œLā€ lens characteristic that suffers without a red ring is re-sale value, and I will not be selling that lens.

Screw that. Paint pens (white first, then red)...nail polish...peel & stick auto pinstriping...

I was thinking about taking the white ring on my EF-S lens and making it red, just for giggles.

Yes, on two 24-105s. One I sent in for service to check balky AF, barrel play, and eliminate barrel droop. They replaced the red ring as part of the $125 flat rate service. The other remains red ringless.

This has not happened on any other L lens (and I have a bunch) going back to 1998.

BTW, the service was about 3 years ago and the lens is still working perfectly, including no droop.

Thanks for the reply... In general, how do you like your 24-105. I have considered replacing my 24-105 with a 24-70 f2.8. What do you think?

The only lens I ever sold was also the best zoom I ever owned...the 28-70 f/2.8 L...the predecessor to the 24-70. Why? The extra reach and IS of the 24-105 are just too useful. At f/4.5 it is super sharp. The negs are slight distortion at the extreme ends (correctable) and, of course, loss of a stop.

Before I got the 24-105, the 28-70 was my most used lens. After I got the 24-105, the 28-70 went unused.

The 24-105 is the perfect walk-around lens on FF. Not so on a crop sensor. I never use it on my 7D.

If I can only take one lens on my 5D and 5D III for general purpose people, landscape, street, I take the 24-105.

The same thing happened to my 24-105. It seems to be common. Maybe it means that it is a pretend 'L' after all.

I've had two 24-70's over the years and both had electrical/AF issues which were fixed under warranty, but there are many sample variations if you're lucky to get a good one.

I sold both and thought to temporarily try the 24-105 until the 24-70II becomes available and have discovered that I actually enjoy it much more since it has a more useful focal range and IS.

Same here: the other day the red ring on my 24-105 L IS just snapped. The lens is about 4 1/2 yrs old.

I'm probably just going to live with it unless the lens needs to be serviced for some other reason.

Re: Broken red ring on a "L" lens

Mine broke off some time ago, and I have now read enough posts about it happening to this lens, but no others, to convince me that it is a design problem. Which means Canon should fix it for free, just as they do mirrors that come unglued.

Re: Broken red ring on a "L" lens

It seems this is not an uncommon problem which seems to target the 24-105 and no other! I remember seeing several posts in the past with this problem. Here is another

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=41311123

fortunately, this has not happened to me, but if it did, I wouldn't bother fixing it. I am very happy with the lens, and unlikely to sell it. The red ring means nothing to people if they are not into photography, and I don't see it as a status symbol!
