The Canon 2x converter will give you 140-400 but no AF if you have the 70-200 f4 lens. The 1.4x one will give you 98-280 with AF on the same lens.

The TC won't cause grain unless it's low light where the increase in ISO could cause increased noise.

no grain, but your images won't be as sharp as they are without the teleconverter and you might have to up the ISO (which then increases noise).

1.4x is fine. I don't care for the 2x on anything but a good quality prime. Preferably on my 300 f/2.8 IS.

I believe this was shot with the 70-200 f2.8 IS w/1.4x teleconverter

full crop

300 f/2.8 IS +

Adding more glass between your image and a camera will always degrade the image a bit but that wouldn't stop me from using one when it is desirable.

The Kenko PRO300 DGX 1.4 is a better TC than the Canon, one of the best you can get. It is also cheaper.
For an inclusive test, look here (in German, but you can make it out)

Try to find a Kenko MC4 AF 1,4 DGX, not the 300 model.
Much cheaper and the winner!

Had a chance to compare ...

I had a chance to compare the Kenko MC4 and Pro300 1.4x versions with a few lenses. The best results were with the MC4 and 70-200 /4 IS. Here the MC4 was sharper, over the frame, the only aspect slightly worse than the Pro300 was CA. The test was based on inspection of very fine writing at about 15 feet distance, at 200 mm f/4.

I don't have my notes for all the tests, but I remember that with some lenses the Pro300 was sharper (though no other combination came close to the 70-200).

None of the other lenses I had to hand worked nearly as well with either TC. TC performance depends, I believe, on the exit pupil distance of the attached lens (i.e. where the iris appears to be when you look through the back of the lens), so it is perhaps risky to extrapolate to other combinations.

So, OP, which 70-200 do you ask about? If it is the f/4 IS the Traumflieger result applies, otherwise I would not be certain. It could be that the Canon MkIII and MC4 which perform similarly on the Traumflieger test also perform similarly on other lenses. If that is true there are some tests with the other 70-200s on The Digital Picture. Then again the MC4 is cheap ...

PS. the MC4 was "DG" but I think the DG/DGX does not signify any change in optical design.

Optically, by far the best teleconverter is 7D or 60D. The latter is not much more expensive than 1.4xIII whereas the former comes with included spare battery and more FPS for action photography.

It might sound crazy, but think about it a moment...

Have you carried out the comparison with one of those cameras against the MC4 on the 5D Mk II?

I did it with a 500D against the Kenko MC4 on 5D Mk II, and found the differences to be subtle. Of course the 7D or 60D would be better, but I'd be surprized if you found it "far better optically".

Re: Tele converter for 70-200 in 5D Mark2 ?

Both the teleconverters 1.4x and 2x will work fine with the 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM lens. You can read my review of that lens here: http://www.indiawilds.com/diary/canon-70-200-f2-8-l-is-ii-usm-review/

If you want to use the 70-200 f4 L IS USM, then the 1.4x works fine. The 2x works well only if the lens is top notch. I use the Canon EF 2xII TC with my 400mm f2.8 L IS USM and it works fine.

The 1.4x TC will slow down your lens by 1 stop and the 2x TC by two stops. So the 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM lens will become 140-400 mm at f5.6 . In low light, you need to increase the ISO. However, the 5D Mark II has good high ISO capabilities.

If you can let us know your intended use, only then we can give you specific examples.

I think this is on the cusp of which is better. Generally, it ends up being about how many pixels are included in the final image, so far as detail retention is concerned. there is a small optical loss with the TC, but that can be outweighed by pixel loss. So, for instance, a 5DII with a TC is almost certainly going to do better than a 40D, simply because it is putting only 10MP into the image rather than 21MP. As for 18MP without TC versus 21 with, it could go either way.

Re: Tele converter for 70-200 in 5D Mark2 ?

The 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM is a latest generation optics and latest IS. So you can handhold it better due to the IS and the quality is also much better.

With the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM lens you can use the Canon's 1.4x as well as 2x TCs. So your focal length can go upto 400mm. It is sufficient unless you are shooting small birds and other wildlife. For general purpose, portraits, sports and for most wildlife it is fine. This lens is sharp. Go for this. This is highly recommended.

At 70mm this lens is better than the 24-70 f2.8 L USM lens and the 24-105 L F4 IS usm lens.

Definitely Canon.

I use the 1.4xII and 2xII Tcs. Canon has also launched the 1.4xIII and 2xIII TCs which work very well with this Lens.
