Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

Correction: In fact 40 samples only.

Impression from the very low resolution samples: the WB850F's Schneider Kreuznach branded lens is not sharp, or it might be focus problem or handshake? But colours seem pleasant and metering seems fine.

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

Thanks for posting, mendes. The pictures certainly do not seem as sharp as they might be, but the low res might be the cause. I'd be interested to see some full-size long and close shots.

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

These pics are not flattering, in the least.

One thing Samsung is trying to do with this cam is home in on the people that are fooled by high MP counts, as even in the introductory press conference, they were pushing that high number as a reason for it being "a serious camera by anyone's measure" and in their social networking, they are doing much the same. Some people there even comment about how it's got more MP than dSLRs, therefore better and more technologically advanced than dSLRs.

The other aspect they are pushing is closing in like crazy on all their subjects to show bokeh.

These examples are really, really mushy. I guess that is to be expected with 16MP on a tiny sensor chip, but also it looks as if something is wrong with that lens, especially at the sides.

Not just Samsung. This is what Sony claims when it promotes HX30V:

"There’s nothing complicated about megapixels. The more you have in your camera, the sharper and finer your pictures, especially when enlarged or played back on your big screen TV. No more fuzzy faces, diluted detail or blurred backgrounds. No more hammering away at the delete button. If you want to blow up a great shot of yourself and get it framed, it’s a sure bet you’ll see much more detail with a high megapixel camera. This one has plenty of pixels – over 18 million to be precise - more than enough to make impressive large prints or crop a picture to focus on something specific without losing definition."

so that makes it ok if sony is doing it?

Where did your idea that it makes it ok if Sony does it come from? Or what makes you think others think it is ok when Sony does it?

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

Then what's the point of saying "well company X does it too!"

Sure, that doesn't make them right. It's a problem across much of the industry, but it doesn't help matters much when that's the directive, to say others do it.

It's much like the argument about defects right out of the factory, when someone says "but other companies are the same!", so we just spiral down the world of defective products.

What about they are being accomplices and complicit in their separate efforts to promote a same understanding to the public?

Apparently you have an idiosyncratic and peculiar way of reasoning. Results of some extraordinary cognitive development and socialization processes?

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

Hey guys, stop shooting the messenger! I think we all agree that it is unlikely that going much above 12 megapixels on a 1/2.3" sensor will increase the quality of the picture. But until we get full size WB850F files from subjects in conditions that allow us to check this out, we won't be absolutely sure.

Personal attacks. Just lovely. From compact cameras to personal attacks.

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

Thanks Cyril.

If you have not looked at this, take a look. HX20V seems to produce good photos.

At full size the Canon SX240/SX260 are better than that and probably as good as the compact super-zooms are going to get for this year. Though I believe that the Canon SX have slower widest aperture at the long end of the zoom, if that is critically.

Re: WB 850F Sample Photos

mendes, schaki, thanks for the pointers.

The Panasonic ZS15 (TZ25) also seems a reasonable alternative, with slightly better IQ than the Panasonic ZS20 (TZ30) though with fewer MP and less zoom.
