I just paid $223.84 for a loose screw.....

Well, a couple of week ago I received an ERR 30 on my Canon 7D. I got the message again about a week ago. I though, oh my... shutter problems. So, I sent it in to Canon for repair. I just received the camera back from Canon repair. It was a "loose screw on the bottom of pcb. Tightened screw." I'm not sure to be happy that was all that was wrong or be unhappy that they tightened the screws to me.

You might want to contact Canon customer service, and nicely point out that the only way that screw could come loose (being inside the camera) is if it was never properly tightened. They may be willing to cut you a break.

On the other hand, although it seems a lot for a loose screw, that includes time and handling to process your order, a technicians time to open the camera, find the loose screw, fix it (OK that part is only 30 seconds), reassemble and test the camera, package it back up, ship it back to you. All of these steps take a person's time, and add up quickly. Of course they are making a profit on the repair, but I doubt it is as high as you think.

I guess I would try to look at the bright side that the camera didn't have a major problem and be happy the screw didn't break free and short anything else out. Sorry you had to go through that.

Definitely worth phoning them, and ask to talk to a supervisor if you don't get at least a break in the repair. (I did for a repair on a lens - third time - but out of warranty - and got a 50% discount).

You didn't pay $223.84 for a loose screw. You paid $223.84 for someone to open your camera very carefully, inspect it, find out what was wrong, and then put the whole camera back together again and keep it clean. The screw tightening was free.

Look at it this way, it saved you having to buy a new 7D, and saved you $1500. For the work Canon did and the time they spent, that is not an unreasonable charge. Would you be willing to do the whole job for less?? Easy to create a basket case if you don't know what you are doing...

The real question is whether the problem is solved and whether the guarantee has been extended. If so, you have made a tax free profit.

Some people would be delighted to achieve a $223-84 tax write off for having a loose screw.

This sure sounds like a "client" saying that "all you need to do is press the shutter button on the camera to take a picture" and then follow up with "how hard is that?".

It's like that old plumber story...

The anecdote goes, a plumber once charged someone $100 to fix a problem that required only tapping on a pipe with his hammer. When confronted to justify his fee, the plumber said he charged $5 to tap on the pipe and $95 to know where to tap.

Not saying this applies in your case since I agree, a loose screw is probably a mfg issue that should not be charged for. I suspect that if you call Canon they'll waive the fee entirely.
