SZ-10 at the ballgame

How to save $10,000? Get a small Olympus SZ-10 for less than $200... fits in your pocket, even with its 504mm telephoto lens. F/3.1 - f/4.4... no problem at all for capturing action under the lights at a big league ballgame. Here, from seats near the field, just past first base.

Now, DSLR owners, of course, will get sharper, more highly-detailed images. But small-sensor portability and lost cost sure work for me!

I can't find fault with these, even knowing that the SZ-10 only has a CCD.

That SZ-10 does good work in your capable hands.

Re: SZ-10 at the ballgame

Thanks Henry -- actually, the SZ-10 makes me look good... not much shutter lag.

Figured something out -- if I watch a player who will do something predictable, like swing at a ball, if I press the shutter button just when he starts his swing, it will take a great picture -- of the swing a milli-second later, with bat halfway-around.

Same with a pitcher -- you want to take the picture a bit after he starts his throwing motion, and aim the camera a few feet in front of him, as he falls off the pitcher's mound during the throw.

Baseball is good for photographers. Exciting plays are predictable, like if there's a runner on third -- if your're lucky, he'll try to score and you can pre-focus on home plate and the catcher. Same with a runner on first who might want to steal second. Predictable!

Plus they have hot dogs and beer, which helps image stabilization...

You know the game, and you use the camera as an extension of your brain and your hands.

You should do well with any camera. Enjoy the one you have, your SZ-10.
