[NX20] AF Comparison with NEX-7

It was tested around 5 pm in cloudy weather.

First test is done with front object is located about 1 foot from the cameras and back object is located about 8 feet. It was a test to compare full movement of AF range.

Second test is done with front object is located about 5 feet from the cameras and back object is located about 8 feet. It was a test for more general AF test.

Re: [NX20] AF Comparison with NEX-7

Looks very impressive on the NX20 and seems to fit my feelings of how both the NEX 3 and NX 200 focus compare. NEX 3 focus is about the same as the NEX 7 from what I understand.

Re: [NX20] AF Comparison with NEX-7

NX20's AF looks more "decisive" (less pumping) and overall faster: excellent.

Thanks for all the infos.

Excellent comparison indeed, AF performance of NX20 is very very...good, beyond my expectations.

What about focus peaking?

Hello, thanks for the info

Did you try the manual focus? Is there a kind of "help" to focus, like the focus peaking of the Sony NEX?

Thank you!

did you have a chance to run the same test with one of the SSA lenses please ?

THAT would be the main thing I want to see tested when it comes to AF speed.

cant help thinking that samsung need to get the 24/1.8 SSA out asap to help push the nx20. With that lens (providing its good) people would really have to take notice of the nx20.

Re: [NX20] AF Comparison with NEX-7

I agree 100% ! This is a key focal length that is waiting for a premium prime lens.

By the way, my personal dream is that we get soon an announcement for new nx lenses (16-80 movie, 12-24 ultra-wide, 55 pancake). I think that would have been silly to announce them before the new bodies on the one hand. On the other hand, a separate annoucement for lenses can be a way to focus the attention on the NX system twice instead of once.

Just my two cents worth opinion

THAT would be the main thing I want to see tested when it comes to AF speed.

The two SSA lenses are not the fastest focusing lenses in the world because they are both slower focusing by design (85mm f/1.4 and 60mm macro). They are very fast focusing for the type of lens, but that type of lens is generally slow focusing. Kit lenses don't have to move as far when they focus.

on my NX200 the 60mm is pretty much quicker compared to the 18-55OiS at 55mm

you have to put the 60mm on "Limited AF" so that it works as short tele. By doing that you can use it as a standard lens benefitting from the SSA nicely

Re: What about focus peaking?

NX20 doesn't have "Focus Peaking" like Sony NEX has.

But NX20 has 2 methods. One is magnifying center 7x, and the other is Focus Assistant bar. It shows contrast value in bar graph. You can easily determine when contrast is max (which means it is right focus).

Can you magnify a point other than the center point in manual focus mode?

I would assume that the NX20 has the same magnifying feature as the NX200. if used with an NX lens, you can change the focus point where you want to magnify.

Re: [NX20] AF Comparison with NEX-7

I believe that the sony had its anti-shake program on.
This could have caused the pumping.
