Re: NX20..External microphone plug?

Hello,

On the right, there is an NX-20 with an external microphone mounted on the hotshoe.

Hope this helps.

The NX210 has it ( http://www.ephotozine.com/article/samsung-nx1000--nx210--nx20-hands-on-preview-19020 ), so the NX20 must have it, too.

Thank you both.

Do you think the microphone is just sitting in the hot shoe or is the actual connection to the camera via the hot shoe?

EM10 External Mic

The Samsung EM10 external mic is particularly interesting for two reasons. It has adjustable levels and a built-in headphone jack for monitoring. Even cooler, unlike most competing solutions, it requires no clumsy external cables: A/D conversion is performed by the mic itself, and data is then transferred to the camera through the hot shoe.

Re: EM10 External Mic

Samsung is using the 2 extra contacts for the flash SEF8 to connect the micro to the camera.
The NX20 has the same 2 extra contacts.

Re: EM10 External Mic

I highly doubt the actual connection is through the hotshoe- after all, the contacts are purely electrical, right?

Anyway, as has been said, I doubt they would put a jack in on the nX210 and not on the NX20.

Not quite. The 2 extra pins at the rear of the hotshoe are only power pins, used on the NX200 to supply power to the SEF8A flash. They may be included on the NX20 so that the same flash can be used. However there is little need for that since the NX20 has a built-in flash, so I suspect they are intended to also power other devices via the hotshoe. For example, the current GPS10 gps module requires 2 AAA batteries. They could make a much smaller gps module by eliminating the batteries.

There are also 4 data pins surrounding the central pin of the hotshoe. At least a couple of those are superfluous for flash purposes and are already used for routing gps data to the camera when the gps module is in place. There's no reason they can't be used for other purposes, as they apparently are for the stereo mike.

Anyway, as has been said, I doubt they would put a jack in on the nX210 and not on the NX20.

Agreed.

Re: EM10 External Mic

Thank All.

Samsung has nothing on their US web site for the NX20.

Also I thought it was a significant jesture to announce the NX20 on the same Day Nikon announced their D3200.

I think this was Samsung saying 'We mean business'.

Re: EM10 External Mic

EM10 is powered by the hotshoe.

Also...

A/D is done in the microphone module, with digital audio sent through a high speed serial link in the hot shoe to the camera..

Also...

There is a headphone jack on the EM10 so you can plug in and check levels as you record.

Also...

It has a "wide" and a "zoom" mode, to help control the direction and scope of the audio input..

It is a very cool device!

Re: EM10 External Mic

will it also be possible to use it on the NX200?

I'm a bit concerned about NX200 support in the future. The remote shutter release is reported as NX1000/210/20 only (is that correct btw?).

If a camera from last year is already being phased out and the new accessories can't be used on it anymore than this would be one major reason to consider changing to another system.

Re: EM10 External Mic

In fact the nx200 is of the same "generation" (sensor, processing, ...) as the nx210, nx20, nx1000.

Announcing a remote shutter release that only works for the newest models is already a punch in the face for everyone who put their trust in Samsung and bought the first model of the current generation.

As far as I understand, the NX200 doesn't have a remote shutter connector, so I think it is quite difficult to add support for it (Except Franiec's one).

I don't know if the NX200 has the connector for the microphone, but if it doesn't have it, then it won't be possible to use the microphone.

The remote shutter uses the USB connector (which is available on the NX200)

According to the announcement (see above) the shutter release is not backwards compatible (i.e. does not work on NX200)

the microphone - according to this thread - uses the extra pins on the hot shoe (which are available on the NX200).

So the questions are still:

  • does the mic work on the nx200?

  • does the shutter release maybe also work on the nx200 and the announcement is just wrong (as are the various other specs that are on different sites)

  • if no and no, why stick to NX then? if that's the philosophy for the NX future then that would mean that the nx20/210/1000 would become obsolete by Q1 2013.

haven't you heard of the term improvement? or evolution? you should be glad that products are continually improving significantly rather than getting the same old product with a few facelifts and sold for more.

the NX100 has been out for 2 years and still holds value, so it's highly unthinkable that such new cameras would become extinct within 6 months.

adding standard features like a remote shutter connection (which was btw available on the nx100) can hardly be called an improvement.
plus the nx210 in fact seems to be a facelift sold for more.

i am not talking about nx100-> nx20/nx210 but about the nx200 which was released quite recently.
the nx200 has exactly the same connections as the announced nx210

the only info available is a preview stating that the usb remote shutter wont be backwards compatible (both cameras have usb) and a posting in a forum which says that the mic will use the extra pins on the hot shoe.

if remote shutter (and maybe other accessories) will not be backwards compatible then this means that there will be NO accessories available for the nx200 except 3 flashes.
