Apple does not insist on doing so. The $1200 price is for an entry-level iMac that has a 21.5-inch display, not a 27-inch display (the one that would be worth roughly $1000 standalone). So the computer, alone, would not be available for the $200 that you seem to believe that it would be.

As far as Mac Pros go, you, yourself, observed that (Xeon) workstations from other vendors also cost money, and said that you wouldn't buy many of them, either.

Apple cares about Macs; how much they care about Mac Pros (as opposed to notebooks and more consumer-oriented desktops) is the issue.

Apple doesn't do product surveys, and it has the next 2-3 years' worth of product already in varying design stages with detailed data on the pipeline for inventory and upcoming parts. The idea that a petition on some site is going to attract any attention whatsoever from them was always ludicrous. You can find myriad video and music sites where pros want new Mac Pros too, but so what?

It's nice you have a hobby, though....

I've written to Tim as well. Three times in fact without so much as a beep. I remember writing Steve Jobs once, and got a response within 2 days from him personally. I think were dealing with much different DNA here. Sadly, I think the writing is not only on the wall, it's engraved! The other day I configured an HP with new processors, and almost pressed the button. I'll wait till WWDC, and I'm jumping ship!

I'm sick of the silence. I configured the following..

Intel® Xeon® E5-2680 2.70 20MB 1600 8C

Intel® Xeon® E5-2680 8C 2.70 20MB 1600 CPU-2 (Must be same speed as Processor 1.)
HP Z820 Localization Kit
HP Dual Processor Air Cooling Kit (Supported with Dual Processors only.)
AMD FirePro V7900 2GB Graphics
HP 16GB (8x2GB) DDR3-1600 2-CPU RAM
HP 1000GB SATA 7200 1st HDD
16X SuperMulti DVDRW SATA 1stODD
HP Single Unit Packaging
HP USB Standard Keyboard
No Included Mouse
HP 3/3/3 Warranty

Cost after 27% discount $7,395.12 including Tax!

That is one kick ass machine, and it's everything I can do to hold myself back. After WWDC I'm switching if Apple remains tight lipped! Plus it includes a 3 year warranty, and it's shipping!

I don't want to paraphrase Princess Leia... but....

"You needn't worry about your specifications. If hardware specifications are all that you love, then that's what you'll receive."

There's more to having a Mac than having the latest and greatest chipset the very week Intel start shipping it.

If you want a particular chipset and don't care about what operating system you run then sure, go on buy a HP. It'll be a great machine, and Win 7 is already a great OS.

But...

As an ex PC person. I love my Macs. You'll get my Mac when you tear it out of my cold dead hands!

Spoken like a true kool aid fan. I have two Mac Pros now, along with a 13" MBA, two minis, an iPad 1 and iPhone4S. My second Pro is a 6-Core 2010 model I got last week. I put 13 TB of hard drives in it with 12gb of RAM for digital photography. I gave up waiting for the mythical new Mac Pro. Apple's build quality is without peer but they are getting out of the computer business and moving to iCloud content streaming whether anyone likes it or not and all the lemmings will swoon and follow. This could be my last Apple purchase, but with VMWare I can transition over to whatever manufacturer still believes in configurable computers with a viewable file structure and mass storage I/O.

Apple is specializing itself into eventual redundancy. What will they do when there are no more tablets and smart phones to be sold? Voice controlled television sets aren't the answer.

Apple sold something like 17 million Macs last year, 5.2 million alone in the Xmas quarter, a 26% increase over the same period a year previously. Macs are no longer the main source of income but there's no way they're "getting out of the computer business." It's still billions of dollars in profit ... and the Mac division is growing while the PC business is stagnating.

No chance. You're an artist and you are passionate about your tools. Absolutely no chance of jumping ship, you're just expressing your frustration.

I literally lol'd (actually laughed out loud) upon reading your question. The question reveals a short reading of Apple history. The answer is blindingly obvious.

It's like asking in 1994 what Apple will sell after people stop buying PowerBooks (which were extremely chic for a while).

It's like asking in 2002 what Apple will sell after people stop buying transparent colored iMacs.

It's like asking in 2004 what Apple will sell after people stop buying iPods.

What will Apple do when there are no more tablets and smart phones to be sold? Easy answer. History informs us that Apple will sell whatever is on the steep upside of the adoption growth curve. It wasn't tablets and smartphones 10 years ago, it might not be tablets and smartphones ten years from now, but whatever is , Apple would like to continue forecasting customer needs accurately enough to put out a competent model of it before the rest of the industry does, and grab that growth curve.

We can be sure of one thing. Whatever will make the company thrive in the future in competition with other tech companies, it will not be desktop and laptop computers. The rest of the PC industry is all too painfully aware of this now as their PC sales growth continues to drop, quarter after quarter.

Not saying Macs are unimportant. My Mac Pro and MacBook Pro are still the most important devices in my work, as they have been for 20 years. But the entire technology industry knows those form factors are not where the high future growth is .

Did that three times, absolutely no answer of any kind from anyone. I once wrote Steve Jobs about the very same thing (g5 at the time). Received a reply in about 4 days. I think Time Cook is a very different CEO.

I'm no Apple fan but I think most folks knew Jobs was gifted and yes obsessed with his area (which is why he was good at it) Cook is a bit of a behind the scenes guy, maybe he does some good stuff admin wise, or inventory he's supposed to be spot on.

As far as everything else goes he's not fit to lace one of Steve's old trainers, he's a bit of a lame duck CEO none of the fire that Job's had. I don't see him lasting that long being honest, they'll have to find a Steve Mk II from somewhere..someone who has the vision and guts to try bold things.

It isn't as matter of "maybe" or "he's supposed to be". It's widely acknowledged that Tim Cook refined Apple operations to the point that it was a competitive advantage against other companies. This is significant because other companies could not take it as far as Apple and Tim Cook did, or did not think to. When other companies cannot secure enough tablet-sized LCDs at a good price to beat the iPad price point, that is all because Tim Cook looked ahead and locked it down with contracts. That is not trivial.

This does not come down to a Steve vs Tim face-off. Apple's success needed both. Steve could not do it without the right team in place to support his wild concepts. Tim and Jonathan Ive were part of that team. Tim can probably be a great CEO as long as there are enough other people on the team to provide the creative spark that Steve did. Tim can't do that on his own because he is a numbers and discipline guy. Jonathan Ive and other unnamed staff might be enough, or they might now. We'll see. But it is unlikely that Tim Cook is a liability. In fact Apple may need Tim to keep the company from sliding into wasteful spending and loss of control over the supply chain.

Sure, you write a dozen CEOs every day, and they all respond.

If Tim Cook doesn't respond: Might be he has a couple thousand other smart guys that send him direct emails with complaints as well. Might be worth using the company's feedback site or just call their customer service to speak about improving a product.

Oh my, so profound*, so insightful*. Never a true word has been said*, because Apple is a company that has proven itself completely able to see (create!) opportunities*.

It's been over a decade now since Apple release a new product*, let alone something that was actually more desirable than their competitors*, or faster than the previous generation*. And the usability*! OMG don't get me started about Apple and their blinkered view that user experience doesn't matter!*

And of course nobody needs to mention the build quality* that is just as poor as their customer service*.

' ' = Everything I say is true if you remove iPods, iPhones, Unibody laptops, iMacs, iPads, OSX, Gesture based UIs, iOS and Apple's development 'App kit' from the equation. If you ignore those you're right Apple doesn't have a clue and will fail very soon.

If you 'do' include these products and software systems in your assessment of the company, then I think Apple stands a fair chance of still being able to sell people stuff for a few more years.

By that do you mean specialising in desktop operating systems or mobile operating systems? Or long term device support? Or retail? Or customer service? Workstations? Laptops? Mini desktop computers? All in one computers? Hand held media players? Mobile phones? User interface design? Music creation software? Office suits? Software development kits? Server software? Media distribution? Home media streaming? Video editing? Video codecs? Book publishing? Tablets? Packaging? Chinese worker rights? (too soon?) Photo processing software? Instant messaging? Face-2-face video calling? The Computer-human interface? Home NAS devices? Wi-fi routers? Displays? Bleeding edge interface protocols? Shaped glass production?

You can criticise Apple for many things, but specialising is not one of them! They have areas they specialise in... but they have lots of them!
