Is K100d too old?

I have just read taitai's post "is *ist D too old". It has got me thinking about my K100d bought 13-07-2017 which I remember was Friday the 13th !

Done a quick recharge, used kit lens and this is the result.
Ah, memories.
Richard.

Re: Is K100d too old?

Clearly it is a worthless piece of junk

Seriously though, that 6MP Sony sensor was / is beautiful and allows excellent detailed prints up to A4 even with some cropping. The image quality of a K100D is probably good enough for 99% of photographers 99% of the time...

Best wishes

Too old ? A big no from me because I'm still using mine and will continue to use it until it ceases to work, mind you though I do have a few hundred bad pixels, some occasional yellow banding and it has a habit of resetting itself if not used for a few days.....still a great camera.

I own and K-5 and love it, but I will NEVER sell my k100d Super. It's a very special camera. And the IQ, not performance, rivals, if not exceeds the K-5 sometimes, IMO.

To any noobs reading; the below statement is 100% false and is more influenced by nostalgia than reality.

Pentax Prime, for the sake of the noobs, can I ask what it is you think I was referring to specifically when I said IQ and made this statement that made you feel compelled to correct me as though you were right and I was categorically wrong? I am just curious.

Well...I recently went back and looked at the test images I took with my K100D to compare against the K-7 I was buying just two years ago. I have to admit that those K100D images don't look nearly as good as I remembered. I'd have to agree that, at least in my case, there is a lot of nostalgia attached to my memory of those older cameras (I had a ist* DL before the K100D). Being honest, I'm hard-pressed to think of a situation or parameter where the IQ of those older cameras exceeds the current ones.

Terrific bang for the buck though back when a ist* DL with kit lens was $367 and a FA50/1.4 was only $162. 2006 was the good old days.

It was my first dSLR, and it was excellent - I just sold it last night! I was thinking of keeping it as a second body, but then, one of the reasons I bought the K-01 was for a smaller and lighter body, so, I wasn't going to use it anyway. I'm content knowing that I have my 6000+ pictures over the years to keep those memories.

"Is K100d too old?"

I would say for buying may be yes, but if you already own it it's fine to use it as long as you are happy with it.
And to be honest I still prefer my retired K10D (CCD) colors sometimes!

I will never say my K100DS is an old junk. See photos via the link....Especially the colors for the 6MP CCD compare to CMOS.

Re: Is K100d too old?

Sorry Kyle

I have to agree with Prime on this one

The k5 at base ISO spanks all aps-c cameras and most FF in terms of IQ obtainable.

I would say your statement is technically correct the k100d at base iso is better than the k5 @iso1600 .... just

But the k100d in the hands of a photographer is considerably better than the k5 in the hands of a fool.

Re: Is K100d too old?

Very nice photo, a few sharpening artifacts, too, perhaps?

K100D had a wonderful JPEG engine and perhaps the strongest 6MP IQ on the market. If one has no need for cropping and can live with the camera's outdated features (or lack of them), and get the AF accuracy right on the actual camera copy, it is almost a no brainer.

Re: Is K100d too old?

Although I agree that the K-5 outresolves the k100d and won't argue with that, my older k100ds totally spanks my K-5 when it comes to flash exposure accuracy, for example. It's no competition. Now I've created a user mode in my K-5 to help reduce the overexposure issues and it's better, but it's nothing like the out of the box accuracy I got with my k100d. It's just one example, and why I said "sometimes." My point was NOT that the the k100d is a better camera, because it's not. And because I bought the K-5 for it's high ISO and other features, I'm not too concerned about the flash issues (yet), but there are a few instances, I've noticed, when I wouldn't hesitate to use my older camera over the K-5. Bounce flash situations being one where I'd prefer better in camera exposure accuracy than having to tweak in post. So 100% false? No. 99.5%. OK I'll take that. If Andy or others want to debate me to the mat, that's fine, I'm happy losing. I'm happy using both cameras for what I perceive to be their strengths.

PPG still likes it.

5 of my last 6 photos approved for PPG are archived photos taken with the K100D. I wish my K20d had a 14.6 MP CCD sensor.

I guess this is bad news for all the folks wanting a FF Pentax... looks like they'll be waiting at least 5 more years.

Ah, ah. yes indeed 2017 and I never noticed. Looking to the future? my wife says I cannty remember just one day back !

Looks like I will soon be left with only the K100d pictures as memories of it. I'm looking to upgrade to K5 and it will have to go.

Spec wise, K200d is somewhere between K100dS and K20d..
