Just solved the problem: Cannot load USB driver for ELPH 310 HS

Figured this may help someone, someday.

I plugged in a brand new Canon Powershot ELPH 310 HS to a laptop USB port with Windows 7. We bought this for a lab, as it does 1080p video and macro closeups, and 240 fps video, and comes with a rechargeable lithium battery, in a small affordable device.

Turned on the camera and did NOT get success with USB. All Canon software did not see the camera either. Rebooting/uninstalling stuff did absolutely nothing.

The device manager under "Portable Devices" was showing the yellow exclamation mark for the MTP USB device, with Properties showing a Code 19 (registry problem). It should have said "Canon Powershot ELPH 310 HS"

Lots of searching later, finally got it solved by doing the following:

regedit
export (make backup.reg)

find all occurrences of klfltdrv that are the value next to Upperfilters, with the class key EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A. For instance:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A} having “Upperfilters” = klfltdrv

Delete the value kfltdrv so it's blank.

There may be several like that (I had 2-3).

Enjoy!

Re: Just solved the problem: Cannot load USB driver for ELPH 310 HS

Gotta love the internet.

Here I am two years later with a new laptop at work, and I cannot use either of the two powershots, the laptop does not successfully load a driver for it.

I go get the original Canon CD and realize that the laptop does not have a CD player. Great.

Start downloading the Canon software for this camera, it's not a clear process, you don't know which package has the needed driver, plus it asked WAY too many questions, with registration necesscary. All that makes it a tedious, unenjoyable process. Especially that, in the end, their software NEVER successfully recognized the camera (unbelievable).

So I search for some keywords and fall upon this forum, but I couldn't find the exact registry value described in the message, but did find a very similar one (KLFLTDEV), so I deleted them and lucky me, the problem is solved!

Very cool time warp feeling of helping myself "in the future" when I wrote that two years ago.
