300mm f/4 lens - outer diameter of the lens hood?
Here's a random question - what's the precise outer diameter of the front edge of the lens hood on the Nikon 300mm f/4?
I'm planning on shooting the May 20 eclipse - going to rent a 300mm f/4 and put it on a D7000 with a 2x converter for a 900mm equivalent. I need to get a solar filter for it. I have an order with one company for a 77mm threaded solar filter (~16 stop ND filter, with additional protection against UV and IR wavelengths).
Problem is, they're taking a while to fulfill the order. There's plenty of time, of course, but I wanted to look into backups, just in case. The only other solar filter I've seen that's readily available is from Orion telescopes. These are designed to fit over and clamp down onto the outer diameter of the scope. So, trying to figure out what size I would need to get to fit the 300mm lens - I'm assuming the specs on Nikon's website aren't super accurate.
Can anyone help me out? The more precise, the better, but probably within an 1/8th of an inch would be close enough.
