Song for Samsung Quality WB150F

Looking at cameras in a mass merchant. Happened upon the Samsung WB150F. Has Wi-Fi and lots of neat effects modes, but also full A S M mode, plenty of image size choices and ability to adjust image parameters (contrast, saturation, ...) in-camera. Just impressed how fluid the operations were and build quality much better than nearby Canon, Nikon, Sony models IMHO. Samsung like Panasonic is an electronics giant, but both companies have folks on board who are obviously photographers.

Re: Song for Samsung Quality WB150F

It is suprising that it only does 720p video. I had a WB2000 and that did full 1080p and you could take stills without the video interrupting and seemed well ahead of the rest. Also the lens seems slow. It is difficult to follow Samsung's model numbers as they just do not seem to follow any logical sequence.

Every new camera seems to be a unique one off without any sign of an evolutionary process. You get WIFI but the video regresses. The EX1 is produced which implied there was to be an EX2 but then their attention wandered.

Samsung seem to struggle with consistency yet if the new NX20 pictures are anything to go by they have broken records in the delayed development of a new camera which looks exactly like the old one, which looks exactly like a squashed DSLR, which seems like too much consistency. Given that the restriction of having to place the mirror and viewfinder in one postion has gone the designers seem pretty locked in.

All very baffling.

Thanks for the info about WB2000. I agree about video. However, as one who is slow to adopt technology, the wireless features of this camera seem useful and well-implemented. Verifies what Samsung was saying to DPR on News pages about emphasizing connectivity. I guess my point was, this camera has a lot of "toy" features, but it doesn't feel or function like a toy. Compare with low end camera from other manufacturers.

Re: Song for Samsung Quality WB150F

When Olympus brought out the SZ30MR the press seemed to assume that it was the first camera to seemlessly capture stills but my WB2000 had been doing it for 6 months before. My current Canon SX40 still interrupts the video if you take a still. When I posted the fact about the WB2000 on this forum I did not get a single response. This forum is primarily EX1 and NX as a single forum will always become high end user and compacts will be driven out. It would be interesting how many people would appear if a seperate compact forum was created.

I am sure there are a lot of happy Samsung compact users but they will be flamed on this forum if they post pictures. I am surprised you have not been accused of being a shill after posting a complimentary comment about a Samsung compact rather than just being ignored.

Best wishes.

This is quite true, but the bar has been lifted in recent time, and now the EX1 has been pushed out as well, leaving this forum to be almost exclusively NX equipment. I think it could make a big improvement to rename this forum to samsung SLR talk and create another new forum for P&S.

I have also stopped posting here for the reasons that you have named, as its not worth the trouble to have to fight it out every time you say something.

LOL.

"neat effects modes"
"plenty of image size choices"
"ability to adjust image parameters (contrast, saturation,...) in camera"
"[...] operation and build quality much better"
"[Samsung] have folks on board who are obviously photographers."

It's almost like Samsung is clouding the IQ question by flooding talk about such things like the above list.

Seriously, you can't make stuff like this up.

Re: The snake bites.

Met a Samsung rep whilst browsing in-store yesterday, she was demonstrating the new wi-fi enabled compact - Looked fun, though why you'd want to "take a photo downstairs whilst you're upstairs" is a mystery I probably don't want solved.

We actually didn't get round to getting the model number, but I might have pursed my lips at the price (£170 or so - oh well give it six months...). Also noticed it was a Samsung lens, not a higher-end SK.

Looked and felt well built, everythings going wireless so sure I can imagine tons of cams having wi-fi in the future - straight uploads to Facebook, You Tube...or even just to your own laptop without using a cable.

Re: The snake bites.

The WB150 has a CCD instead a CMOS sensor, that is the reason for 720p video.

I just bought a WB750 with a 12MPx CMOS sensor and 1080p video, 30fps, 240fps and 480fps.
