Congrats Nikon! D800 vs 5d3 sales at Amazon

The Canon 5d2 was a huge seller. Maybe these initial Amazon numbers point to similar success for the D800.

{NR}: Nikon D800 is at the #22 spot, the new Canon 5D Mark III is #83.

Thats great to hear!

It could however have something to do with the 5DMK3 being released much later than the D800.

Where is the D800E rated? I couldn't find it in the top 100. Perhaps I missed it.

Good point. On the other hand, in the last few hours the D800 is now at 21...and the 5d3 is at 94...5d3 losing ground vs gaining. Just a bit of trivia

Some people treat these manufactures as if they're your favorite sports teams. I'll never get that mentality. I'm invested in Nikon because their products suit me best based on their actual merits. I really couldn't care less how well one of their products sells relative to the product of another company if only one of them meets my needs. Also, the profits they make from products like this relative to the money spent developing and manufacturing them are actually a lot lower than the profits resulting from lower end products.

Just as VW group makes their money selling Golfs and Jettas, not Veyrons.

Re: Congrats Nikon! D800 vs 5d3 sales at Amazon

There are a few advantages for Nikon users in the fact that Nikon has a short-term advantage over Canon. First and foremost, as Canon has been leading the past years, it might balance the marketshare between the two. Second, the more revenue and more users Nikon get, the more likely they are to release lenses. It will end up hurting everyone though if the advantage continues too long.

As for profits, I'm not so sure. There is very little competition in the D800 and D4 segment. Canon and Nikon is basically enjoying a duopoly. And empirically, a duopoly tends to lead to significantly higher margins for both manufactures, as a price war would end up hurting both. The lower end faces much tougher competition, and I'd assume much lower profit margins. Total profits are of course a different matter, due to the vast difference in volume.

Porsche has much higher profits than VW, Apple has much higher profits than HP, and so on and so forth.

Around 30 minutes ago, the D800 hit as high as no. 20 at Amazon. The 5D3 was hovering in the 80's to 90's, swapping places with the D5100.

I think we need a real live chart of D800 vs. 5Dm3 sales. At the DPreview homepage that is.

D800 is a huge upgrade from a D700...

even though Nikon says it's not a replacement for the D700. There are a lot of D700 owners who have been waiting to upgrade. The 5D Mark III seems to only be a minor update of the Mark II, so fewer people are considering it. Then you have a bunch of people jumping ship from Canon to Nikon. First time DSLR buyers will be lured by the huge MP count and the $500 difference between the D800 and the 5D3. It all adds up.

Re: D800 is a huge upgrade from a D700...

Even Nikon rep has stated D800 is not meant to be successor to D700.

People say it's spiritual successor to D3x, in a wierd sort of a way.
