Memory card did not save 40 pictures 550D

I was wondering if anyone has come across this strange problem.

I was photographing a soccer match and having deleted many images from my 16 gig card like I always do before the next shoot having saved them well before on the computer hard disc.

I re inserted the card in the 550d and off we went to the stadium.

When I got there, I took off the 18-200 and put on the 24-70 for some posed team pictures.

I did not have time to check the screen to check the quality as its very much a rush job before the match started.

I took several more shots and then changed lens to a very long zoom lens on a monopod.

When I got home and loaded the photos onto the pc, jpegs and raw, the earlier photos were not there!

I searched and searched but could not find the teams pose before the game which is a very important shot to have.

I then ran some Recover my files software on the computer and searched for all images that may or may not be on the card but the number and date sequence was not there, only much older photos that I had not needed anymore.

I have checked the memory card and it seems to record perfectly.

The memory card door switch works ok and no image is seen on the viewfinder led display for f stop or shutter its just goes blank.

So I must have shot with perhaps a poor connection of the memory card and those shots did not record onto the card until I fiddled around with the large telephoto lens and then it works perfectly then and again today after this mystery.

So an ideas beside mine please.

Obviously, I shot with shutter noise the first photos.

I also checked today that by removing the card, I could still shoot but unless I looked at the screen, there is no warning in the viewfinder of this problem.

Be grateful for any useful input and before you say it, if I had had the time, yes I would have done a quick playback on the screen!

Regards,

Alan

My Canons have a way to set your camera so that you cannot take a picture without a memory card. I have mine set this way. It is just too easy to forget to put one in.

I also don't delete pictures after use. Rather I format the card.

I don't know if any of this helps.

Try to recover again with Photorec. That it is free is irrelevent; it's the best recovery software I've used (including paid-for versions from big name companies).

Might be worth checking the internal memory of the camera (i.e. plug it in to your computer). Not enough memory to save every photo but possible some photos are there.

What setting is that?

I do the same thing - and I have the camera format the card. At least with other cameras I've had a problem where fomatting the card elsewhere made it unreadable to the camera.

I hope the OP can get his photos and the suggestion to check internal memory was a good idea. It would stink to have taken posed photos and just not have them afterward.

Re: Memory card did not save 40 pictures 550D

Can you confirm that there is internal memory on the Canon EOS 550D please?

How do I get to it please as I have always removed the memory card and used just that data?

I cannot see a plyback of any images when the card is abscent?

Many thanks in advance

Alan

On the 550D press Menu . It's on the first screen and titled release shutter without card . You can set it to either enable or disable .

When set to disable it will flash up a message when you try to release the shutter without a memory card.

When set to enable it will take a picture and display it but there appears not to be saved - there appears to be no internal memory apart from the buffer memory (I'd previously assumed there was a pathetically small amount of internal memory, but am totally wrong about this. Presumably the setting is there for when the camera is tethered to a computer.

Sorry for the false hope - just had a play with mine and although it'll take a picture without the card in (and flashes up a message across the screen saying no card in camera ) the pictures do not appear to be saved anywhere. If they're temporarily held in the internal buffer memory then the rest of the days shooting will have overwritten it.

I've just snapped off a few frames then hooked it up to the computer - Windows Explorer found no images (nor anything else) on the camera.

Thanks Heisbehindyou for your pointer to this software.

Low and behold, they were there and so I have the team photos that I really needed.

Brilliant! I will now go and give them a donation for getting me out of trouble.

MANY thanks to everyone! So PLEASED

Found this message thread today while searching for information about why my Canon 40D did not save pictures to the memory card.  Earlier this week I was shooting a big event.  Camera seemed to be functioning normally.  When I went to transfer the photos the next day, only about half (170) were on the memory chip.  It appeared the other half were completely missing from the chip.  I downloaded the software mentioned in your post and was very happy to see that it found all the missing photos!  Although your post is quite old, thank you very much!

Re: Memory card did not save 40 pictures 550D

Have a Canon T5 and too a trip to Utah for a few days. Well while shooting on Day 1 with the same mini SD card plus adapter the shots taken recorded. Day 2 I shot over 300 shots but when I wanted to play them back on the led screen I would get a question mark. Figured I would find these files once home.

Well I switched on a new card and Day 3 went well.

Got home and looked for those Day 2 files and when I first uploaded them to my ipad they took space but showed blank (white screen). When I tried adding them on my pc the card showed capacity of files but only showed the files from Day 1.

Tried Photorec after deleting the files to restore them, tried doing a restore before the deletion but all I get are the Day 1 pictures. Card is a 32 GB and I took pictures both in Raw and Jpeg, figured I would get at least the jpegs.

Has anyone ever had this type of problem? I thought it might be my Canon but Day 3 with another SD card worked fine.

I did change two lens, 24mm and a 70 to 300 lens during all 3 days.

I realize that this is an old thread, but I'll add my 2 cents.

I think all these problems could have been prevented by formatting the memory card, IN THE CAMERA, at the beginning of each outing.

Re: Memory card did not save 40 pictures 550D

I was on the trip, long waited, in Italy. I have Canon 550d.  Before this trip I formated the 32GB card in the camera. I shot 1000 photos. When shooting I checked the quality, so they were present in the card? than card was full, I took another card and continued. After coming home I found the first card empty. 1000 photos were gone for ever. Just now I try to recover the photo. Photorec is runing. I recovered some files until now. It is old files from sound recorder. I used the card to record sound before I formated it in Canon and some 400 old photos. No sign of Italy pictures. For the future: to be sure that the photos are there is it enough to see them on the camera or should I copy them to computer? Any comment?

check your other cards

could be that you accidentally mixed up some cards in changing them. Look at all your cards. It's very easy to do that.

Hi robot555
i was using this fancy Canon 5D mark4 with Sandisk HDHC Class 10 32 GB card.
after the entire night full of candid wedding photography, i came back to home the next morning and all the photos which i already viewed on the camera screen, mysteriously disappeared when i was trying to transfer the data to my macbook.

Is there any way where i can get any leads regarding the recovery of the photos.

Anyone in this forum could let me know.
TIA

Once I had photos that disappeared from a memory card, maybe more than 10 years ago.  I found a free software on the internet and it recovered them, except for a few of them that may have caused the corruption.  That was so long ago that I don't remember the details; only remember seeing some of the pictures recovered again like almost magic.  Check the availability of some software that may restore your photos.

SanDisk Rescue Pro (free software).

Recovers about 98% from a formatted card (trust me, I know!  ).

If your card is shot, then all bets are off though.

Best of luck!
