Nex-7 is bad bad bad . . .

Nex7 is even more disappointing than expected with RF lenses

I'll be breaking up this post with pictures per lens, so you can see for yourself.

The Nex has both magenta cast and loss of sharpness on the 21mm, 28mm AND 35mm RF lenses tested. It ALSO has this on the 16mm E mount lens, and with the adapters.

Only the other E mount lenses behave better.

Don't flame the photographer - this was a mid afternoon exercise with three cameras and 15 lenses - all in 45 minutes. Can you see me going - lens on, lens off, lens on, lens off. (There is some missed focus, poor framing).

Bottom line, I think that there is enough here to look at for comparisons. I was specifically looking for magenta cast and sharpness.

My conclusion is that the Nex7 is pretty much useless with ALL wide RF lenses (35mm inclusive) and E-mount wider than 18mm. I know that the color cast can be corrected (did so on Nex-5), but given the better quality of the 5N, why even bother?

The 5N is a better camera, imo, for several reasons, a big one being the way it handles the legacy RF lenses much better.

Images are processed in LR3, but only for downsampling, not for color corrections.

I do apologize for the Nex-5 images being in 16:9 format - it doesn't show the magenta cast as well as the 3:2 would have. Will redo at some time. But generally, the Nex7 is WORSE than the Nex5.

Note - in the album, I listed filenames as "Lens_Aperture[ab]_Camera.jpg" (a=building, b=sky).

Well, perhaps the fairer thing to say is that the 5N is the more versatile of the two on a few issues, one of which is compatibility with rangefinder lenses. I'm sure the 7 would work just fine with my C/Y CZ lenses.

I wouldnt put those expensive lenses on the ground.

I wouldnt put those expensive lenses on the ground, no matter how serious the color shift is. First rule of digital photography, keep your equipment clean!!

Not trying to flame you here...but shouldn't you have expected all of this? There isn't a single lens in this group you just showed us that performed any worse than I'd have thought it would. This just reaffirms what we already knew: the NEX-7 is not the right choice if you've got a lot of symmetrical RF glass.

Re: CV35 - Cosina Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4

This was new news about 3-6 months ago, but is well known now. I think most people will disagree that the 35mm Zeiss is "useless". The purple corners are so minor on the 35mm Zeiss, that you see them only when you look for them in white corners. I keep my 5N to use my legacy rangefinder glass on the odd occasion with the wides.

Fortunately, UWA DSLR glass seems to work just fine. Here is the Sigma 8-16 at around 10mm on the NEX 7

Not nice

Hasn't this been an old problem with the 7 ??

I'll give you $500 for it Henry, I could do with one setup just for macro

All the best Henry, just glad I shoot long lenses or macro.

Danny.

Yes, I expected all this, I put this out as a reconfirmation for others.

I am keeping the Nex-5N, and do not intend to use the RF lenses on the Nex-7. Both cameras have features that I like, or want, but they are not combined into a single camera. So, I'll be using one one way, the other another way.

Thanks for posting these

Wow a lot of work. Good viewpoint also.
Very informative for a new 5N shooter.

To my eyes:

All the different apertures makes for a very nice comparison. The 5N proves to be the king with most lenses. For best it needs -1/3 to - 1/2 EV. The 18-200 sel proves to be a real fun tool in good light. The 5 apparently shows more contrast bc of a slightly different curve. All nice confirmation. The WA MF all look best on 5N.

Thanks again!

regards Perry
