Just posted: OM-D E-M5 full res ISO samples

Hi all,

We've just got an 'initial production' E-M5 and have posted an ISO series taken under low-level, low-colour temperature halogen light:

Andy, can you please post the raw files?

It would allow us to play tunes with the settings in Olympus Viewer - to see where we can get the best quality in jpegs.

For example, my normal processing sequence is to develop with 'muted' colour scheme, contrast - sharpness - saturation all set to -2 with NR off and gradation Normal... export to tiff in AdobeRGB colour space for finishing in PP.

Hope that makes sense, and thanks so much for putting this up so quickly

No worries.

Sorry, no.

Thanks anyway.

Any chance you could post a high dynamic range shot, to show us how this sensor compares with the GH2 at base ISO?

Thanks a lot! Looking good so far.

Up to ISO1600 it's looking very good. Expecting this camera to perform miracles at even higher ISO is something I leave up to other people.

I have no idea what the difference is between "initial production" and normal "production" but I'm not expecting any significant differences.

This is not a miracle camera but it sure looks like a big step up from the previous Olympus models, and even a step up from an aging larger sensor camera like my 450D.

Four Thirds User just got an "initial production" E-M5 for testing too, but they haven't posted any photos yet.

I like the results a lot! Now get rid of the hump and I'll buy one.

Thanks Andy for posting the info.

I will be staring at my three old OM's convincing mysellf that humps can be cool again. Nahh, still want a PEN.

Nice to see default vs. NR off examples

We all would like to see the RAW files instead, but this is helpful. Thanx!

Re: Once you see the hump

In an up close and personal manner, you'll realise how insignificant it really is.

Here is what I like...

The ISO12800 jpeg with NR off and sharpness at -2 does not look that bad.

I could easily clean it up and make it look good (not great nor perfect ). Perfect for the web and smaller prints.
The setting are 1/100 sec and F/6.3.

I am guessing with the IBIS, I could easily shoot at 1/60 and F/5.6 indoors in light and get this exposure. At 1/30 and F/4 or F/2.8 I could shoot in very, very low light and get similar results.

Of course my first choice would be to shoot at ISO800 or less!

Not precisely, but it'll be somewhere around 3000K.

I've found that having Contrast and Saturation set to 0 results in sharpening halos - even with sharpening set to -2.

This has an adverse effect on noise too.

Whatever you see in these samples, you can expect better from raw.

Cheers

NF Low

Thanks Andy, the NF off shots are surprisingly good. The higher ISO Standard NF shots are fairly horrid as usual. I nearly always stick to Low NF which gives a good compromise, but we can extrapolate I guess.
