will the G1X have scratch lens problem too?

Do you think the new G1X will also show the common scratch lenses problem found in the G series? My son´s G11 already shows scratches on the lens, which is too bad cause the G11 is an excellent camera.Best wishes.Yod

It doesn't have the automatic lens cover the other G's have that might help it some those old lens covers could trap dirt and dust behind them and cause scratching.

Why?

I've been using the G series since the G3, right up to G12, filterless, and NEVER scratched a lens.

Of course not as it has no Lens shutter

Of course not as it has no Lens shutter - it's the leaves in the lens shutter which causes the scratching either by them being made ouside thickness tolerance or grit being trapped behind them - the G1X has no lens shutter so no scratches.....

It was first noticed in the G10 but canon were too stupid to make the distance from front elly to leaves greater on the G11 and G12 so they suffer too (Japanese camera makers are Stubborn in repeating design errors, canon and fuji are famous for it ).

So because you've never suffered, the problem therefore does not exist?

I've never experienced it with my G7 either, but there are a large number of posts on these forums that indicate that it is possible for the "protective" shutter blades to make contact with the lens surface and cause scratching.

To incorporate a protective shutter whould have made the G1X's already huge lens barrel even larger, so I presume that is why they went with a clip-on lens cap.

The answer to the OP's question is therefore, "No, the G1X will not suffer surface scratching from the lens cover."

Scratched lenses exist. But, as I said, I don't believe in adding more cheap glass in front of a decent lens, and it takes quite some doing. Or quite some bending of the shutter.

Nothing to do with adding a filter, but there is undeniable proof that the "protection" shutters CAN damage the front surface of the lens. By having a conventional lens cap the G1X is not going to suffer damage from the so-called "protector" covers.

Re: Why?

The very reason I am reading this thread is because my G15 has received numerous scratches to the lens either by the protective cover itself or by grit caught on the lens being ground into the lens by the cover.

I love the G15 to pieces but it is now a challenge to shoot into the sun at all as the small scratches set off numerous flare points in the image.

Consequentially, I am looking into the G1X MII as a replacement. I am hesitant to buy any of the smaller G series camera again due to this problem.

So I am thankful for this information about the G1x II as I haven't seen one in person yet.

The thread you revived pertains to the original G1X, which did not have a retractable leaf lens cover system. The G1X Mark II does have such a system. I have not seen any reports of scratches coming from this system. but the camera is quite new on the market. I have not noticed any contact on my G1X II, and hope it stays that way.

It's hard to argue one way or another that a general problem exists from individual personal data. Further, not knowing the root cause(s) and not looking at the statistics (Canon won't ever share) leaves us somewhat guessing based on info from those who post or the odd article.

I suspect that there may be an real issue here for a number of people. But my tea leaves are no better than anyone else's. I buy based on my own experience and what I read in these forums....there is a lot of great info to be found.

That said, and being very conscious of my first sentence, the 'lens scratching problem'  does not enter into my buying decision.  I'm very paranoid about lens cleanliness and even a minor scratch  would cause me not to use a camera or lens.  You can see from my equipment list I have many opportunities to either scratch a lens thru improper handling or cleaning or have it scratched due to a design defect on any camera.  I have no such scratches. I conclude that the incidence is real but likely small or I'm very lucky.

I just took my G1X MII on a two week trip to Scotland (and a S120 as a backup) and took over 5k photos on the MII and 1k photos on the S120. Was very nervous in case I had any issues, but both worked flawlessly. Talk about packing light. I learned a lot about the MII and got to appreciate its capabilities and limitations as I became more familiar with it. I will post more when I organize my thoughts. A slight hint is that I would use the same again. Also, no lens scratches on either camera. But then, my first sentence puts that in perspective.
