Re: Canon Elph 310 HS vs Canon S100

The 310 has a wider lens range, and does pretty well for that size of camera.

The S100 has a bigger sensor which under some conditions gives sharper prints, and under low light conditions, gives better prints.

The S100 appears to handle CA better than the 310, although that may only be an issue with certain types of subjects and larger prints.

Re: Canon Elph 310 HS vs Canon S100

Better for what? The ELPH 310 HS has become my take everywhere shirt pocket camera, it works well in that role. $200 at Costco. If I have the carrying capacity and desire to tackle more demanding subjects, I will use one of my DSLRs or my Canon SX40. The 310 has limited manual control but does take pretty good movies and has an 8x zoom lens. It is my insurance that I will always have a fairly decent camera with me. I have never handled an S100, so can't comment. The 310 met my cost, size and quality criteria, but I am only an enthusiastic amateur. Go to a nearby camera shop, if possible, and try them out. Most of the camera shops I know will let you put your own memory card in a the camera and let you take a few photos around the shop. You can then evaluate them on your PC at home, since a camera LCD is limited in judging IQ.

Re: Canon Elph 310 HS vs Canon S100

The 310HS has one advantage over the S100, and that's its longer telephoto, the equivalent of 224mm vs. 120mm. It's also slightly smaller, and, of course, half the price.

But the S100 is better in low light with an aperture of 2.0 vs. 3.0 on the 310HS. It also has a wider lens, 24mm vs. 28mm on the 310, important for landscapes and so forth. And the S100 uses Canon's new DIGIC 5 processor rather then the older DIGIC 4, and it offers greater control over the shutter speed and aperture.

I therefore think that the S100 is the "better" camera, meaning it will allow you to take better photos in more situations than the 310HS will (assuming you understand how to use the controls and have the patience to do so), especially in low light.

But if cost and/or greater telephoto are important, the 310 is a very good camera.

I passed on the 310 for the 300 which starts at 24mm and priced lower. It is my "back-up" camera for my s100.

Re: Canon Elph 310 HS vs Canon S100

The s100 has a lot more user control and the digic-5 sensor. The Elph 300 is very capable for a tiny camera that you can easily pocket - I usually leave it on auto. Not quite the IQ of the s100 but a great value at its current price.

Just be careful you don't crack the monitor against all the junk in your pocket when you sit down or whack into a pocket-level obstacle.
