Not too bad considering. Looks very similar to the 6400 sample posted on the Canon JP site.

Strange, EXIF says picture was taken on 2011-09-22.

At first it looks cleaner than D800 ISO 25600 sample photo but on close inspection, see how NR obliterated details of the grasses in the right lower corner of the photo. Look at the buildings in the background, noise & NR smudged whole picture. It is mediocre at best, not a miracle has happened.

Decision, decision, we are the slaves of decisions we made inadvertently.

May God forgive us our imperfections!

Dust to dust, what on earth are we entitled to claim?

There's about 2MP worth of detail in that shot.

And that's being pretty generous

The dark areas are a bit noisy - but the light areas are quite usable. Even more so after being put through some NR software.

I'm curious if you could point me to any 25600 images with both light and dark areas in it like this which are better?

D800 will likely give it a good spanking.

LOL - so you've just confirmed you are a troll.

You are comparing a sample image from a pre-production camera to a camera which has not even been released, and there are no high contrast 25600 ISO images of.

TROLL!

Re: full sized iso 25600 5D3 image

Indeed.

In fact the D800 will not even do 25600 natively.

What's your point?
If it looks bad it looks bad... natively or via h-mode.

To be honest I'd rather have h-mode of which I know is not the best quality rather then let me think that this ISO 25600 would be an acceptable setting.

My point is you're comparing it to - well nothing. Please show me the D800 photo you are comparing it to. I could find only one 25600 D800 sample photo - and it was taken in the light - not the dark.

In camera and software NR are two entirely different beasts.

Believe what you like. I am a Canon user. When the D800 was announced, I pre-ordered, because from what I know, Canon is unlikely to match it. I thought, if Canon does, I can sell the D800 at a good price, but the more goes on, the more I know I won't be selling the D800.
There has been in-depth analysis of the D800's low light performance, here:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&thread=40756917

amongst other places. We now know exactly how the D800 performs. based on that I know that a D800 can produce a better image than the one we are looking at, less noise, more resolution. Don't know the full performance of the 5DIII, but the question was only about that shot, and to be honest, even the D7000 can produce a better result in similar lighting conditions, as Pierre Sottas' well known demo shot shows.

Completely meaningless. All that matters is how it does at the defined exposure.
