G1 X in Hong Kong ... and a warning.

Picked up my G1 X in Hong Kong this morning.

Arrived in the shops yesterday afternoon.

Retail pricing: about HK$5,800, WITH a free 8gb Sandisk so do NOT fall for Digital Rev's obscene pricing of HK$7,500 .

Around US$748 by today's exchange rate.

They are on the way folks.

Re: G1 X in Hong Kong ... and a warning.

I bought mine at Hing Lee, a camera shop in Lyndhurst Terrace, from a guy I deal with a lot.

But it will be about the same price in the Stanley Street shops and even from the big retailers like Broadway and Fortress. Also from Man Shing and Wing Shing in Mong Kok.

The Canon RRP in Hong Kong is around HK$5,900.

Digital Rev is cheap

compared to $900+ units offered on eBay.

I do not mind paying extra to have it now!

That's a very good price point, around the same price when G12 was just launched.

So have u moved on from the X10?

I can see me using both of them for quite a while. The X10's fast lens and close focus are nice. But then we know of the problems too. My orby street scene with the X10 had no orbs on the G1 X last night. Still waiting on that firmware from Fuji.

Did you have any chance to get some sample shots yet? Any chance you can get them uploaded? I'm in the exact same spot as you, except I just sold my X10 as I couldn't tolerate it any more. Looking forward to seeing your shots!

Some test shots

Sorry.. These are all a bit run and gun, some deliberately shot in situations where the the X10 gave me problems or to test for closest focus.

They are all straight out of the camera.

Re: G1 X in Hong Kong ... and a warning.

Thanks. I expect to visit HK in a month or so.
Previously, I have visited camera/electronics shops
in the Mongkok area, including those you named.
I am interested, but already have a G3, and have
not made a decision to buy ...

Re: Some test shots

Those images look really good. I'm impressed with your night scenes. Thanks for posting. I will be getting a G1X as soon as they are available in the US.

Re: Some test shots

Thanks Gary! The shots look good; I understand its hard to just get grab shots sometimes. Please keep the shots coming though. So far it looks like the shots are higher ISOs are quite positive. Any chance you could start shooting at targets wide open throughout the zoom range? I'm very interested to see if the camera is capable of decent/good subject isolation (some people say it can, others say the slow lens prevents this). Cheers!

nothing obscene about 'list price' because we all know 'street price' always lower

Canon's list price in Hong Kong is HK$5,900.

The price I bought if for was only HK$100 off.

Digital Rev is charging well over list price. But it's whatever the market will bear I suppose.

I'm sorry, but 25% on top of the normal retail profit margin is a pretty good profit margin to me.

Never mind. The Fuji firmware is a dud.

I have been following the Fuji forum for a long time and the X10 attracted my attention. The new firmware is out and the difference for the orb problem is zip.

The X10 is a dud and no firmware can solve that. There is sensor blooming which means charge spills over to neighboring pixels and when that signal is lost no firmware is going to bring it back.
So for a new small enthusiast camera the X10 has been removed from my shortlist.
